Malaysian Mask Festival

The Malaysia Mask Festival is happening from August 13 to 16 at Esplanade, Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC) Park.

This inaugural four-day festival is also organized by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture (Motac) via the National Department for Culture and Arts (JKKN) for the Pesta Topeng Malaysia or MIMAF 2015. 

As it is the first time that this unique festival is being organized, the objective is to attract tourists from the world over to visit Malaysia.

Over the millennia, masks have been used by humans for protection, performance, subterfuge, and entertainment and it is a very common item that exists in many cultures of the world, each with its own identity and function.

In Malaysia, one of the oldest ethnic tribes called the Orang Asli Mah Meri from Carey Island in the state of Selangor, is world renown for their traditional masks.

Collectors from around the world come here just to see and purchase some of these unique masks too. The Mah Meri will be one of the ethnic people who will be at this event.

This unique and special festival also aims to instill an understanding of the local and international community sociocultural in relation to the mask culture by featuring the uniqueness of masks according to their motif and creation. 

It also exposes the characteristics, universality, and variations of shape and design of masks in accordance with its function and role.

As for the location venue, KLCC was selected as the main location for this event, due to the popularity of the area as it is a base for Malaysia’s most iconic shopping mall - Suria KLCC and the Petronas Twin Towers. 

The MIMAF 2015 four-day festival involves 379 participants which are;
• Malaysia: 287 participants
• Foreign Countries: 92 participants

Malaysia International Mask Festival 2015

MIMAF 2015 consists of five main components which are;
• Performance
• Exhibition
• Demonstration
• Competition
• Parade

The performance component consists of the gala, country, and pocket showcases. The exhibition will feature mask and costume, the demonstration will emphasize on mask-painting and carving, along with face and helmet-painting. 

The competition aspect will highlight mask-painting and coloring, while the parade will spotlight the use of masks and costume, accompanied by grandiose music.

The main showcase will feature performances from all participating countries, while the showcases will be held in various tourist-attractive places such as the Central Market, Sungei Wang Plaza, and Nu Sentral.

A special one-kilometer mask parade will be held along Jalan Ampang (in front of MaTiC), Jalan Sultan Ismail, Jalan P.Ramlee and Suria KLCC which is held on the 14th August from 8.30 pm to 10.30 pm.
