What are Poshtels? This is a new term coined out by the travel and hotel industry where the name Poshtels is actually a mixture of boutique and hostels who have done a modern makeover giving the place a posh feeling for today's backpacker or flashpacker. This is slowly changing all over the world where in countries like England and Europe are already ahead in the game in this tourism and travel genre.

Poshtels are also classified as a guesthouse or hostel, without the prison cell bunk bed scheme, shady receptions and dirty showers. In a report at the recent World Travel Market (WTM) in London this in November 2014,  boutique and nicely designed hostels that offer high-tech modern facilities like ensuite bathrooms, free Wifi and luxurious designs are fast becoming very popular among both leisure and business travelers around Europe.

The term has now made its way into the travel and tourism industry only recently but these kind of hostels have been around for a few years now, only after the popularity at WTM, people are now coming to accept this new branding. Poshtels around the world now offer private rooms with ensuite bathrooms, unique designer furniture and some even the odd chandelier or beautiful art for the comfort of the guests.

Free Internet usage, LCD televisions in some rooms are the attractions to lure travelers while the main reception areas often offer a 44 or 50 inch large LCD TV with local satellite television, some even offer Playstations or X-Box as entertainment for the guests. Free breakfast are also being offered too.

As boutique hotels have evolved and mushroomed over the world in the recent years, youth hostels are now following this growing new trend.  Many of them changing overall appearance to attract a more mature crowd, especially those from the Generation Y era, those born between 1981 and 1990, who are as conscious about style and comfort as they are their budget while traveling.

Most of the Poshtels are located within main cities around the world where locations are crucial for the modern day Flashpacker or clever backpacker that wants to be not-too-far from where all the action is.

In Kuala Lumpur, a number of new Poshtels have opened or done a serious makeover in the key tourist areas of the Bukit Bintang area, a main shopping and entertainment golden triangle in the city.

In Malaysia, names like Reggae Mansion Guesthouse, Number 8 Guesthouse, Sekeping Tenggiri and many others have moved on from the conventional guesthouse and added a nice touch of design and service. Websites of these places are also completely redesigned for a new look and feel. Other places in Malaysia where Poshtels are booming are in George Town, Penang and Kota Kinabalu in Sabah.
