MIDE 2013

Malaysia International Dive Exhibition

The Malaysia International Dive Exhibition or MIDE 2013 is back again and held at the PWTC in Kuala Lumpur from the 9 to 11 July. This is also the largest scuba related event in the region where various organizations and businesses from Malaysia and around the region will participate in this event which attracts mostly divers and those interested in this sport. MIDE is also in its 8th year now therefore you can expect a lot of exhibitors and participants this year.

MIDE 2013 is expected to see more participation from new players in the industry where many new products and information is being offered. Tourism Boards have also shown an interest namely Sabah Tourism which features some of the best diving spots found around Malaysia. You can find them at booth A79-84 in Hall 3. As I am an avid diver, I am hoping to see more participation from other tourism boards apart from STB. A number of diving tour operators are also regular participants here who offer various diving packages locally and also internationally.

The most popular booths during the dive expo would be the diving equipment resellers and among the interesting booths to visit and I personally like to go to the Scubaholics Anonymous booth as they carry an interesting range of dive gear during MIDE. For the seasoned diver, you would most probably own your own BCD and Scubaholics carries some of the most practical and yet interesting BCDs which come in various colours.

Another important item for scuba divers are the dive computers or dive coms as it is usually called. Over the years, many brands have been in the market where some of them have been recommended by dive masters and friends. For me, I have always been a Suunto user as I own a Suunto Adventurer watch and also a Suunto D6i Dive Com. Over at Scubaholics Anonymous, you can find a range of the latest Suunto Dive Computers at very reasonable prices too.

Did you know that there are also some new and interesting dive comps which now come with LCD color display? Yes, LiquiVision is one of the brands that have been in the market over the last 12 months and now seem to be getting popular.

Diving Packages are also sold during MIDE and sometimes, you can get some really good deals or packages from the various dive operators here. Best is to shop around before making your decision. As many divers tend to only dive with their own group, my personal recommendation is to try out different dive groups or operators.

Diving Courses are also available from a number of dive schools who participate here at MIDE. Sometimes they even offer prices which are below the market rate but on a professional level, I would recommend that you do your homework before committing to cheap dive courses as sometimes due to volume, certain standards are not met and this can cost your life. When people sell under market prices, they are usually desperate for the business and lose focus on the principles of safety and so on.

With this, I am just giving you a heads up to this sport; it is not the cheap price that is important but the level of professionalism and safety procedures that can save your life. Who said diving is a cheap sport anyway?

Finally, those attending the Malaysia International Dive Expo 2013 take your time, visit all the booths before making your decision. As for me the writer, I will always attend this dive expo to learn and observe the changing trends and so on for the sport and industry so I can share the info with everyone.

You can also find Scubaholics Anonymous at booth A149 –A152 at Hall 3, PWTC, KL. Apparently, they are also launching a new range of dive related t-shirts which can be bought at the booths. Other items they deal in are Diving Computers, Wetsuits, Fins, Accessories, MiFlex Hoses, Regulators and offer professional underwater photography courses and trips. The diving photography trips are quite interesting as they visit places like Mabul Island, Layang Layang Island, Bali, Malapascua, Maldives and also Anilao in the Philippines. I have personally attended a few of these dive trips and found it very interesting.

For those wanting some of the latest dive equipment in Malaysia, you can check out Explorer Lifestyle, an online lifestyle dive shop. They carry the Oxycheq BCD, Suunto Dive Computers, Dive Rite BCD's and many other equipment.
