This is actually a Hindu festival which is celebrated by the Tamil community in Malaysia on the full moon in the Tamil month of Thai (which is usually late January or early February).
For those who do not know, the word Thaipusam is a combination of the name of the month, Thai, and the name of a star, Pusam.
It is said that the particular star is at its highest point during the festival. The festival commemorates the occasion when Parvati gave Murugan a 'Vel Spear' so he could vanquish the evil demon Soorapadman.

Final Thoughts on Thaipusam in Malaysia
You can also check out my other Thaipusam photos if you are heading there for the next event, which is usually at the beginning of the year.
If you are visiting Malaysia at the end of February or early January, make sure you head over to Batu Caves to witness this incredible festival of people, religion, colors, and culture.
As a local Malaysian, I have never witnessed this, therefore, I will be there this Sunday to capture photos and pictures of Thaipusam 2013.
