Damai Beach Resort Review

Review of Damai Beach Resort

Damai Beach Resort in Sarawak is located at Teluk Bandung, minutes from the Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF).

This is also one of the well-known accommodations here, as the place is one of the pioneer resorts in this part of Kuching. After staying here many times, I would like to share my experience through this review.

Damai Beach Resort Review

Beautiful Damai Beach.

The Damai Beach Resort is a 4-star resort that faces the South China Sea on 90 acres of sea frontage and is majestically nestled within one of the world's oldest tropical rainforests in Borneo.

The location of this resort is also just a 60-minute drive from Kuching, the capital city of Sarawak, and during off-peak season, many locals will come here to get away from the hectic city life.

The resort has 252 spacious rooms and Suites in 2-story buildings, chalets and ethnically designed units spread over its beach and hilltop wings.

Each room type is specially designed to reflect Sarawak's rich and diverse ethnic background, which is rare nowadays in hotels or resorts.

The type of rooms available here are;
  • Hill View
  • Superior Poolside
  • Standard Balcony
  • Seaview Deluxe
  • Chalets
  • Baruk Suites

As for activities around the main resort, there are many available that you can choose from. One of the popular ones would be the many types of boat and river cruises.

Guests can choose from Dolphin Watching, Bako National Park, Satang Island, Firefly watching, and even plain sea fishing. All these can be arranged at the resort's recreational counter. You can also look at this article on things to do around the RWMF in Santubong.

The resort also has squash courts, table tennis, a fitness centre, a tennis court, and even general cycling for outdoor or sports fans.

Parents should be happy as this place caters quite a bit to kids. Just as one of the room types caters to children with a well-themed kids section in the unit.

For the family of the business traveller, you will be spoiled for choices as the resort has several packages to suit your lifestyle.

Even birthdays, weddings and honeymoon packages are created especially for that moment. There is even a business centre that caters to MICE groups which can house about 240 pax.

As for me, during my stay here in October 2011 with Sarawak Borneo Tours, it was at the Superior Poolside room, which was very spacious. Look at the pictures below, and you will know what I mean.

I was also taken to view the Baruk Suites, the best rooms at the Damai Beach Resort, and you can see why from the photos.

These units are perched on the hillside with a beautiful view of the South China Sea. More uniquely, these units follow the ethnic Bidayuh tribe war house called 'Baruk'.

They are circular and split into two levels with a balcony on the top level. The kitchen and open area are on the lower level. Below are pictures of the Baruk Suites.

Finally, the unique resort architecture is also modelled on a traditional fishing village and is a trendy holiday destination for locals during the weekend.

During the Rainforest World Music Festival, this place gets 100% filled up, so if you plan to come here during the music festival, make sure you book way in advance.

Attractions around here are the Sarawak Cultural Village, Mount Santubong and the Damai Golf and Country Club, just to name a few.

Conclusion

The Rainforest World Music Festival, or RWMF, takes place yearly and usually mid-year in either June, July or August. Damai Beach Resort is one of the most popular places to stay during the music festival.

This is because of the resort's location, which is just a minute's walk from the resort to the festival and usually, the musicians and others involved in the festival will book the rooms there.

If you are heading to Kuching anytime and want to experience something different out of the city, this resort will be one of the recommended choices: the Damai Beach Resort in Sarawak.
