The day spa has also been in operating since 2009 and is also highly rated on TripAdvisor as one of the premier spas to experience while in KK, Sabah.

The spa also focuses on the traditional word Nanyang, which means "South Seas" in Mandarin was a general term used in the olden days by mainland China to refer to South East Asia and now is part of the theme for this boutique day spa here.

With an ambiance that captures the zeitgeist of post-colonial Peranakan culture, South Sea Sanctuary Day Spa presents a relaxation experience that is rooted mainly in the ancient Chinese wellness philosophy; with tinges of influence from Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines.

As I walked into the outlet, I was welcomed by the warm Malaysian hospitality where the main reception staff spoke good English.

As we had discussed the treatment which I wanted, she politely asked me to wait while arrangements were made.

Looking around I found the decoration quite unusual for a spa as relics from the past was seen scattered throughout the area.

An old typewriter was obvious as when you walked in, while abstract paintings of Buddha lined a cabinet wall and overall colors were mixed cleverly with the design.

The spa waiting area
After a nice hot towel and putting away my shoes, I was led by one of the therapists through the main back foyer of the spa. It was here where I noticed the full zen like atmosphere on my way upstairs to the treatment rooms.

On arriving at my treatment bed, I was then asked to change for my traditional Borneo massage. The therapist then left the room for me to get ready and in a couple of minutes, she was back asking if I was ready. My session started and before I know it, I was sleeping due to the gentle oil relaxing massage.

After my traditional massage treatment finished, I was woken up by the therapist and was asked to change. I was then led back downstairs where a nice hot cup of ginger tea awaited me.

Speaking to the manager of the spa, she asked me how was it and my answer was 'amazing!'. My body felt so relieved from the travel stress that has been building over the many months of travel.

My next destination was actually the airport as I was headed back to Kuala Lumpur so you can imagine how relaxing my flight was going to be.

I told the air hostess not to disturb me as I had a wonderful three-hour sleep on the flight back to KL.
