Kopi Botol (Bottle Coffee) in Sabah Picture

Kopi Botol (Bottle Coffee) in Sabah is my Picture of the Week. This very unique bottled coffee can be found in only two places around Kota Kinabalu town or simply known as KK. One prominent place in town that sells this is at the Museum Kopitiam (Coffee Shop) in town and if or when you do the Heritage Walk in Kota Kinabalu, the tour will take you to this unique coffee shop in the area well known as Australia Place. A bottle of coffee like this will cost you around RM1.50 (US$0.50). The other shop is in the district of Inanam.

Apart from trying this unique coffee, there is quite a lot to see around KK town. One of my related articles is titled 5 Things to do in Kota Kinabalu Sabah. As most of the entire city is accessible by foot, you can spend a full day walking around exploring the many places in town. Overall, if you are a coffee lover and have or have not been to KK, you should make it a point to try this unique Kopi Botol (Bottle Coffee) in Sabah.

Marina Bay Sands Singapore Casino Picture

Marina Bay Sands Casino Singapore Picture is my photo of the week. As I have visited the integrated resort three times for various opening ceremonies, this was taken from the first floor of the hotel while doing a food tour where some of the worlds famous Michelin Starred Chefs operated restaurants at Marina Bay Sands. As for the gaming floor, I took a walk around finding that the ultra modern design made the place look very stylish and yet appealing. The entire place is split into four levels while the general public is only allowed on the first two levels. The 3rd and 4th level are only for VIP and VVIP patrons.

It is also known than many tourist and foreigners would travel all the way here just to try their luck apart from staying at the Marina Bay Sands Singapore and experiencing the most unique Sands Skypark which is located on the roof level of the resort. There is also the newly opened Louis Vuitton Island Maison, a LV store which is built on an island in the bay and also just next to it, the amazing designed ArtScience Museum which holds some of the best exhibitions in Southeast Asia. For those visiting this place, please note that you are not allowed to take any pictures of the Marina Bay Sands Singapore Casino.

Sands Skypark Singapore in Pictures

Sands Skypark Singapore in Pictures is one of my latest photography sessions during my visit to this astounding place in March 2011. Touted as one of the architecture marvels of today, this unique sky park is located on the 57th floor on top of the massive structure overlooking the city of Singapore. For non-hotel guest visiting the SkyPark, note that an entrance fee applies and you are only allowed access to the main decks and not the pool area. You can pass by and take photographs but you are not allowed inside the main infinity swimming pool area.

Below are some of the pictures taken during my trip here and I was fortunate to have some blue skies. One of my previous trips here was horrible as it looked like it wanted to rain so the sky was grey and gloomy. Anyway, enjoy the pictures and feel free to leave any comments. For those who want more information, you can read my other story about the Sands Skypark at Marina Bay Sands Singapore.

As visiting guest are only allowed on the main observation decks, you will see the entire Marina Bay from up here. It is also one of the best places to catch a beautiful Singapore Sunset. Looking down below, you see the ArtScience Museum (Right), Louis Vuitton Island Maison (Center) and Pangaea Ultra Lounge and Club (Left) which is set to open by end 2012. On the other side, you get to see the Singapore Flyer which is the worlds largest Ferris wheel and also the harbor and port of Singapore.

You can also read about the extravagant Opening of Marina Bay Sands or if you are planning to stay here, read about my Marina Bay Sands Room Review. Prices are slightly above the average but for the experience, I would recommend trying it as this is after all an integrated hotel and resort which is the first of its kind in the world.

For aspiring photographers who want something exciting to shoot, you can always visit this place in the mornings or late evenings for some beautiful pictures. These photographs you see here are all taken by me using a Nikon D60 DSLR for my album titled Sands Skypark Singapore in Pictures.

Canopy Walk in Batang Ai, Sarawak

Canopy Walk in Batang Ai, Sarawak is located just behind the one of a kind Longhouse Hilton in this beautiful national park. Guest of the hotel would usually make a trip here as part of the many activities so if you plan on visiting this canopy walk, you should make your booking to spend a night here. The journey to the Canopy Walk or Sky Walk is also quite interesting with fascinating encounters of rainforest flora and fauna along the way. On reaching the start point, it looks pretty steady and non frightening. But this is only the beginning with still a long way to go, that is about 130 meters in length of the total canopy walk.

Starting point of the canopy walk

At the highest point, the canopy walk is about 30 meters (100 feet) above ground level. For those with a fear of heights, please take note - do not look down. And the general rule of the canopy walk is that you should walk one by one with a gap of about 3 meters front and back. At any one time, each flight of the canopy walk can take up to two or three people. But check with your local guide when walking.

Canopy walk lookout point to the Batang Ai Lake

The Batang Ai canopy walk is slightly different from most other canopy walks as it is divided at one point where you see the Batang Ai Lake on the right and a lush rainforest on your left. There is also a nice lookout point at one part of the the canopy stations. This is where they connect from one tree to another.

End of the road. Can you see me in in the picture?

For those who are into these kind of adventures, check out my Canopy Walk at Mulu Park in Sarawak and also the Canopy Walk at RDC in Sabah.

At the end of the canopy walk, it is a steep climb down. Some of the wooden stairs are worn and one must be careful. I hope that it has been fixed after all this while. Anyway, if you wish to visit this place, you would have to stay here at the Hilton Longhouse in Batang Ai as the journey here from Kuching takes about 4-5 hours by van or car and this is only one way. There are longhouse visits, jungle trekking and town visits apart from the Canopy Walk in Batang Ai, Sarawak.

Mustafa 24 Hour Shopping Center in Singapore

Mustafa 24 Hour Shopping Center in Singapore is the only place where you can do your shopping at three o'clock in the morning. Shopping at 3am! Seriously? Well, ever since the late 90s when I visited Singapore frequently, I would come here at the oddest hours in the morning to buy my stuff. This way, the crowd would be less, no traffic jams and the weather would be much cooler. But these days, try going there at 3am and the place is packed jammed with shoppers and tourist. I guess over the years, more and more people found it much easier to come in the wee hours of the morning to avoid the daytime rush.

Mustafa Center at Syed Alwi Road, Singapore

Originally, Mustafa Center was established in 1971 along Campbell Lane in Little India and only sold ready made garments. After the government took back the shops in the area for heritage preservation purposes, the boss,  Mr.Ahmad started to look around and found some old shophouses along Syed Alwi Road which were reasonably priced and not far from his store and just around the corner from Serangoon Plaza. With his hard earned fortunes, he bought them one by one till finally, he bought the whole row. Many people state that putting up a large Shopping Centre in a side road out of the traditional shopping area was a very brave decision by Mr.Ahmad. In April 1995, Mustafa Center became a reality and immediately became a Shopping Paradise to many people. On the weekends, the store easily packs in over 15,000 customers of all nationalities so you can imagine the place.
Crowd at Mustafa Shopping Center
Today, customers can get almost anything from over 75,000 items displayed on four levels covering an area of 70,000 Sq.ft within the six story building which also houses a hotel with a 130 room hotel with a tag line that reads "Shop and Stay" under one roof.  Apart from the shopping, the entire complex also offers other services such as Foreign Exchange, Local Fast Food Restaurant and a Travel Company has helped in contributing to the growth of the business.

Branded Watches at Mustafa Singapore

With a workforce of 1300 staff, an annual turnover of SG$300 Million (US$250 Million), over 150,000 items on shelves and a total shopping space of 150,000 square feet, it is still not enough to accommodate the growing customer traffic. Try coming here on a Friday morning at 2am and witness a traffic jam of vehicles and people around the center.

Mustafa Center 24 Hour Shopping at the Toiletries Section

View of the different levels

Once you enter the many entrances here, you will see loads of hawk-eyed security personnel checking each and every person entering and exiting the store. On the ground floor, you will find selections of branded watches like Rado, Longines, Tissot and even Rolex among the thousands of watches on display. There is a huge electrical section with everything you can possible think of except the popular iPhone or iPad. Toiletries for both men and women are well spread while a music and video section holds thousands of titles. The lower ground floor caters to everything apparel, sports and travel luggage. The first floor houses the main dry goods section while the upper floor caters to everything household and books.

Outside the shopping center

To say that this entire vision was a dream, it definitely came through for Mr.Ahmad as this is the only shopping center in Southeast Asia that is open 24 hours. A novelty, some may think but in reality, it works for the many thousands of customers and tourist that come here daily. It seems like the street that never sleeps here in Singapore. For more information, you can visit the official website of Mustafa Online.

Whenever I come to Singapore for work of simply for leisure, I will surely make a trip here to buy my toiletries and some other stuff as I have found that they stock many brands and the items here are way much cheaper than many other places including neighboring Malaysia. Many of the items are sold in bulk or wholesale while single items are available. If you ever visit the island republic and want to try something different, I would suggest you pay a visit the Mustafa 24 Hour Shopping Center in Singapore.

Krabi Night Market Video Thailand

Krabi Night Market in Thailand is one of the most visited places for any travelers who head here. Located in the heart of Krabi Town, this market is a wonderland for those wanting to experience the local Thai culture and lifestyle. For your added information, the town are and beach area is about 20 minutes distance via car so if you are staying in the Ao Nang area, you will either take a tuk tuk or taxi to get here.

When you get to the night market in Krabi town, the first thing seen is an overhead signage where the road is littered with stalls on both ends and in the center. As you can see from the videos provided below, this place is well worth the exploration if you love markets and local Thai food. Apart from the two, you can also get some souvenirs here. Note the market only opens on weekends.

Krabi Night Market Video

Krabi Night Market Food Stalls Video

One thing about this place is that the locals here speak basic English. So you would have to figure out what they are trying to convey to you if you ask them technical questions. Most common questions would be 'What is that?' and 'How much?'. A number of the stalls here have signs indicating the price in Thai Baht. The best possible time to visit this place is also at nights when the place comes alive and it is also known as the Krabi Walking Street.

Krabi Night Market Opening Times: 5pm to 10pm - Friday, Saturday and Sunday only
Location of the Krabi Night Market: Maharat Soi 8, Behind the Vogue Department Store in town

Getting here via Songthaew (สองแถว) or van taxi is easy as they charge about 20-30 Baht per person from Ao Nang area and same fare back. You can easily spend an average of one to two hours here and it is more than enough. I visited this place in June 2010 under a familiarization trip with Tourism Thailand and this is how I got my Krabi Night Market Video.

Halong Bay in Vietnam Picture

Halong Bay in Vietnam is my Picture of the Week. This is one of the must-visit places on earth where most round the world travelers would make a stop here. The most prominent thing to do here at Ha Long Bay is to take the overnight junk boat cruise. I was fortunate enough to try both, day cruise and the overnight cruise here back in 2010. While there are many types of Halong Bay Cruise to choose from, you have the option of getting the budget cruise (US$40) right up to luxury cruises (US$200+) fit for a king.

Apart from the overnight cruise here, you will also have the opportunity to explore some of the amazing places here like the Thien Cung Cave or the many fish farms around this Unesco World Heritage Site. You should also be prepared to bring some food and drinks while you go for this trip as prices on board the junks are pretty high. Also take note about the main jetty which is the Bai Chay Wharf in Halong Bay, Vietnam.

Louis Vuitton Island Maison in Singapore

Louis Vuitton Island Maison in Singapore is the first sophisticated upmarket shopping concept in the world. This island store located at Marina Bay Sands Shoppes was opened on 18th September 2011. This is also the 5th store in Singapore and the 12th LV Maison Store. It is also the first Maison Store in Southeast Asia. The space age looking island store with glass from the floor to the ceilings will feature multiple levels, a mini jetty and a tunnel that leads to Marina Bay Sands Shoppes. The uniqueness of the structure will not only be a popular photography spot for locals and tourist but it will definitely be the talk of town.

LV Island Store in Singapore

Louis Vuitton Island Maison Store grand opening pictures can be seen at PlushAsia. Superstars from around the world including Cate Blanchett and Chow Yun Fatt were invited for this special occasion on the 18th September 2011 at the MBS.

The newly unveiled men’s permanent leather line called “Damier Infini” will also be launched in September here at the LV Island Store in conjunction with the opening. Shoppers will be pleased to know that there will be a ladies and men's section for accessories, shoes and bags. A mezzanine level will celebrate the romance of travel by dedicating an area to travel luggage and accessories which will be the first Travel Room in Asia Pacific.

A spiral staircase on the same floor will lead visitors up to a magnified space which will display timepieces, fine jewellery and leather handbags. A private lounge for intimate presentations as well as an outdoor loggia which is designed to imitate the deck of a luxury yacht is catered to the upmarket clientele. At the tunnel which goes underground into the MBS Shoppes, there will be a gallery and a bookstore featuring Louis Vuitton's beloved travel tomes and hardcover coffee table books.

In total, there will be four separate stores here which are;
  • At the MBS Shopps via basement 1 you will find the store entrance there while featured are the leather good section, LV time pieces and LV jewellery.
  • The next level is the basement 2 where the tunnel connects the store to MBS shoppes. Here you will find the main bookstore and art gallery.
  • The main Glass Pavilion would be on the first level featuring men's and women's clothing, accessories and bags. An outdoor jetty where guest can arrive via boats sits next to the main entrance.
  • Another entrance to the north of the Glass Crystal Pavilion leads to the VIP area where you can collect custom orders while the LV Travel Section is available.
    Louis Vuitton Island Maison

The award-winning architect behind this is Moshe Safdie who painstakingly conceptualized this since the opening of Marina Bay Sands while the interior of the glass pavilion was designed by Peter Marino which plays with nautical inspired interiors. For the LV fans, this is one of the must-visit stores as it is totally one-of-a-kind in the world. The store is also located in between the unique ArtScience Museum at Marina Bay Sands and the soon to be opened Pangaea, the legendary ultra lounge which is also on a floating island.

View from the Sands SkyPark on top of Marina Bay Sands

To celebrate the opening of the first ever Island Maison, Louis Vuitton Digital is happy to announce the live Facebook broadcast of the red carpet event at Marina Bay Sands, Singapore, hosted by Denise Keller on September 17, 2011.

    Those heading here after the opening can access the Louis Vuitton Island in three ways;
    • Walking in by the main outdoor bridge
    • By boat disembarking on a mini jetty
    • From the mall via tunnel and ascending travelator which will lead them to the center of the pavilion
For some added humor, I took some interesting photos while in China showing how some people hang dry their Louis Vuitton Bag in Shanghai and also see the famous Louis Vuitton Handbag Wheel in Paris, France when I visited this outlet in June 2011. It has been almost three months since I last visited the island republic and I plan to do so in the next few months. This time around, I would most definitely visit the Louis Vuitton Island Maison in Singapore.

    Krabi Walking Street in Thailand

Krabi Walking Street in Thailand is one of the night markets to visit while traveling here. As many would think that this place is located by the sea, you are actually referring to Ao Nang which is a district by the ocean. Krabi is more of a town where many travelers come to explore and visit places of interest like this night market. The walking street is a nightly affair and held in the main town area. Many local tuk tuks and song tiaws (local van taxi) will shuttle from Ao Nang and Krabi town for a fee of 20-30 Baht.

    Krabi Walking Street at night

As I was invited by Tourism Thailand for a familiarization trip here, there were about ten of us who arrived in two vans to the market. We were supposed to make a quick stop here and head for dinner but after sampling some of the local food here, it totally filled most of us up. But it was all good as I had been yearning for some local Thai delicacies for a very long time and this night market seemed to be filled with them. Without much planning, we broke up in three groups to explore the place. While most of the girls went on their own, the men decided to fully walk the market.

Vendors at the walking street in Krabi

At some areas, you would see a number of local handicraft and art being sold. Not that cheesy stuff you always see at airports or souvenir shops, I have to say that the art and crafts here were so much more different and interesting. I ended up buying some Thai paintings while some of the guys bought hand made bags and t-shirts. Comparing with Ao Nang, things here were a little cheaper too.

A traditional child band playing local Thai music

    Pandanus leaves folded into roses

    Deep fried Pineapple Thai Style

When we got to the food section of the walking street, I could not believe that I saw a lady selling freshly made Thai Fish Cakes. This was my ultimate weakness and I ended up buying two packets of it. It was really cheap as each bag cost only 20 Baht which was about US$0.70. Walking around I saw more local dishes that I wanted to try but a special Thai dinner was arranged for the group after this market visit. I could have sworn that some of the group mentioned that we should just have dinner here at the market.

    Local signs with English translation

Grilled Squid with Mayonnaise, Thai style

For the pork lovers, there was a stall selling all kinds of parts of the roasted pig

Thai Fish Cakes sold freshly at the night market

Thai Rotee or Roti Canai (Flat Bread Pancake) sold here at the market

By the time I was done walking around the food section, I was already quite full as I did buy some other local Thai desserts. Apart from that, there were so many dishes I wanted to try and told myself, the next time I visit Krabi, I would for sure make my way here for a feast. Some of the Thai style food was pretty interesting like a stall I saw selling Thai Pancakes or Rotee. This was very similar to the Roti Canai sold in Malaysia and was very tempting to try. But I did not. Overall, if you love all things hawker and Thai, this place would surely be a winner.

    A vendor selling local handicraft

Also for the Muslim travelers, I noticed a number of Thai Muslims selling food at the market which was halal. So if you are from Malaysia or Islam, you would have no issues getting food here. The area here used to be a wet market which was relocated to a new area and this area was eventually promoted to be a Walking Street and officially opened on 20th March 2009.

For those who want to see this place in a first person view, I have another article about this Krabi Night Market in Video.

Krabi Walking Street Opening Times: 5pm to 10pm - Friday, Saturday and Sunday only
Location of the Krabi Walking Street: Maharat Soi 8, Behind the Vogue Department Store in town

The night market is open in the evenings till about midnight and sells all kinds of local food, accessories, art, clothing and handicraft. A good experience would be to visit this place around 7pm and try some of the local food here. You would most likely end up buying some souvenirs too. This is one of the main activities in the area and nothing beats visiting local markets like the Krabi Walking Street in Thailand.

    KLIA2

KLIA2 will be the much talked about budget terminal LCCT in Kuala Lumpur for 2012. This modern airport is also set to open by October 2012 April 2013 and according to owners, Malaysia Airport Holdings Berhad (MAHB), the total cost to build this new LCCT is estimated at RM2.8 Billion RM4 Billion which is currently 52% completed. Located just two kilometers from the main KLIA Terminal, this will be the largest Low Cost Carrier Terminal in the region of Southeast Asia with a total area of 242,000 square meters. There will be a total of 68 aircraft parking bay while the new budget terminal will cater to around 30 million passengers. There will also be a third runaway which is located 1.5 km from the second runaway.

KLIA2 Shoplot Update: 225 Commercial Lots open to bidding. The first tender is set for the first week of December 2011 and the second tender is set from 15th Feb 2012.  From the 225 lots at KLIA2, 50% will be for Retail, 40% Food and Beverage and 10% for Services. The final list of tenants will be confirmed bu July 2012 and the projected opening date for the complex is set at October 2012. Those interested should contact MAB for the tender of shoplots at KLIA2.

KLIA2 in Sepang - Modern design

KLIA 2 will feature a multi-modal transportation hub for buses, taxis, and Express Rail Link (ERL) train to provide connectivity for passengers and also for the public. There is also talk of a possible KTM Train link nearby making it easy to get here. Other facilities here include a semi-automated baggage handling system, support zones, cargo and inflight complexes, a 6,000-vehicle parking complex, two to three hotels and AirAsia's future headquarters. Among the main hotels that will be built here is the Tune Hotel which will serve as one of the main budget hotels here. Another possibility is that Pan Pacific will also open a hotel here.

KLIA2 Pedestrian SkyBridge across the terminals

One of the highlights here is the much talked about 300 meter long pedestrian skybridge in an airport. The skybridge will connect the international pier and the domestic pier. This modern skybridge will be the longest in Asia and third longest in the world where passengers will have the experience of 'walking over' the aircraft compared to KLIA where travelers take the aerotrain on ground level.

On the other hand, there has been much talk about the new airport's Aerobridges where owner MAHB’s decision to scrap the aerobridges has come under fire by many sectors. There are claims that with the recent airport tax raising, international travellers from KLIA have to pay RM65 (US$22) from RM51 (US$17) and RM32 (US$11) from RM25 (US$8) at the current LCCT. Passengers have the right to expect better facilities if airport tax is raised according to one of the Members of Parliament. Now the cabinet has deferred its decision on the installation of aerobridges at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 low-cost carrier terminal pending further studies on the matter, said Malaysian Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha. According to sources, the cost of 80 aerobridges is around RM104 million (US$34.5 million).

    Inside the terminal building

In the entire development, a shopping mall with 35,000 square meters of commercial space will also be built adjacent to the terminal building. While this is still unofficial,  it will be the biggest airport shopping mall in the world with 70,000 square meters of retail space which is even bigger than London's Heathrow Airport, Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport and Singapore's Changi Airport.

Among the proposed brands that will be here are Kiehl’s, fashion labels Gap, Banana Republic, H&M and fashion jewellery brand Pandorato name a few. Popular fast food names like McDonald's, KFC, Starbucks and local coffee chain Old Town are rumored to be some of the returning eateries. In total, there will be about 225 outlets within the terminal and more which are unconfirmed at the moment.

Shopping mall and shops at KLIA2

Other notable companies that would most likely be in the terminal are Tourism bodies such as Tourism Malaysia and Tourism Selangor, big electrical and IT names, sporting goods and apparels, bookstores, pharmacies and multiple duty free shops.

    KLIA2 Map

According to one of the contractors, the construction of the Integrated Complex is expected to be completed by 30th June 2012 so this is at the end of Q2 which is in line with the October opening date for the overall project. It is announced that the project will now be fully open in April 2013. Along with all the other projects, it will make the KLIA 2 Integrated Complex, a RM486 million (US$161 million) privatized development in which MAHB holds a 30% stake.

View from the sky - artist impression

EXPRESS Rail Link Sdn Bhd (ERLSB) also plans to lay 2km of railway tracks from the KL International Airport (KLIA) to the new low-cost carrier terminal (LCCT2) in Sepang to extend its rail services. ERLSB has 12 electric high-speed train sets for the KLIA Express, which runs from KL Sentral to KLIA in 28 minutes, and KLIA Transit, which stops at Bandar Tasek Selatan, Putrajaya and Salak Tinggi before heading to the airport in 35 minutes.

Actual construction taken from the air

According to the MB of MAHB, there is a land is a portion of the 6,750 acre land bank that is set aside for development adjacent to KLIA. Dubbed the KLIA Aeropolis, it is categorized under the wholesale and retail initiative under the National Key Economic Areas (NKEA). The KLIA area will be transformed as a catalyst for tourism, leisure and employment, thereby diversifying the airport city.  Completion of the 50 acre development is scheduled for 2013 and there will be other phases in the development of KLIA Aeropolis which would include a commercial business district which houses office parks, retail/commercial centres, an auto mall, exposition/convention center, medical center, training center complex and service apartments. There are also plans to build golf courses, a boutique hotel and a theme park as well as agro-tourism tracts of land.

    KLIA2 Video

Those companies interested in renting a shop lot in KLIA2 will have to go through the bidding process for the 225 commercial lots here. You need to contact MAB Commercial Services for this process. At the moment, there are 400 potential retailers who are bidding for the 225 Shops in KLIA 2 which is going to be the biggest and modern budget airline terminal in the country.

For the record, this massive terminal project will be called KLIA2 and not LCCT2 which will be bigger than the existing KLIA that caters to 25 million passengers per year while the new KLIA2 will cater for 30 million passengers which is upgradable to 45 million. It is also a terminal and not an airport as many think. The overall project will create about 4000 jobs for locals while it will serve as one of the shopping areas for the Sepang district while opening many opportunities for other developments around the area. Until the completion of this project in October 2012 April 2013, many are looking forward to the new KLIA2.
