Yu Yuan Gardens in Shanghai Picture

Yu Yuan Gardens in Shanghai is my picture of the week. I visited Shanghai back in 2010 on a personal holiday for nine full days exploring this amazing metropolis. One of the many interesting places I found very unique was the Yu Yuen Gardens 豫园 where the traditional Chinese architecture was still maintained here after hundreds of years. It is also simply known as Yu Gardens and is located in the center of the old city of Shanghai. Opened to the public in 1961, the gardens date back to the year 1559 where it was built by Pan Yunduan to please his father during the Ming Dynasty.

Yuyuan Garden which translates as Garden of Contentment also occupies an area of 2 hectares which is split into a shopping and bazaar district and beautiful landscaping. If you like touristy spots, this is one of Shanghai's most famous places while you should expect thousands of tourist there. Mostly locals. There are some famous food places here while one would have to line up for at least 20 minutes to try the famous Soup Dumplings (Xiao long bao). You can also get lovely souvenirs here but take note, it would be much better if you went with someone who spoke Mandarin in order to get the best price. One of the interesting items to buy here would be the Chairman Mao Red Handbook. They sell originals and also copies of it so please ask before purchasing.

The picture above show one of the many traditional Chinese buildings here and most of them are either shops or restaurants. Time to walk around here can easily set you back a few hours as it took me about 3 hours to explore the place on foot. You can get to this place using the metro and stopping at the Yuyuan Garden Station in Shanghai.

As Holiday Villa Hotels owns and manages over 30 hotels around the world, you can be sure that when you make your booking, it will be with ease even if it is for your wedding, honeymoon or simply to stay at.

Imbak Canyon Photography Safari

Imbak Canyon Photography Safari 2011 with North Borneo Safari. One of the most exclusive photography expeditions held in North Borneo, the amazing journey through the thick and uncharted rainforest made an incredible experience for a group of photographers and adventure seekers from around Sabah. Yes, this was the first ever trip into Imbak Canyon by a group of non-researchers which is a conservation area and also a biological gene bank. 20 serious photographers and 4WD enthusiast gathered in the town of Telupid which is the main gateway to Imbak Canyon and Maliau Basin.

You see, I have always wanted to visit this unique and mysterious place since 5 years ago. After hearing the many stories from park rangers who worked around the conservation during my many trips to Sabah, this made it more intriguing and captivating. Finally the day came in February 2011 when Cede Prudente of North Borneo Safari had organised a photographic expedition and this was my chance to explore the mystical place.

4WDs ready for the journey into Imbak Canyon

Arriving in Sandakan, Sabah via Kuala Lumpur, I met up with one of Cede's trusted and very professional nature guide Kenneth. From the airport, we headed towards the town of Telupid to meet up with the rest of the team. The journey took about two hours via the main trunk road which leads all the way to Kota Kinabalu. On arrival, I met up with everyone and to my surprise, another photographer friend of mine was there too. The journey into Imbak Canyon started at about 3pm as we convoyed in ten four wheel drive vehicles. It would take us through vast remote areas on interior Sabah while stopping briefly at the town of Imbak which is a small outpost and the last stop before proceeding into the canyon.

One of the 4WD going through a river at Imbak

Normal vehicles will not be able to access the canyon due to the rough and muddy terrains therefore only four wheel drives are suitable to make this journey. Upon reaching the canyon junction, our ranger who was in the lead vehicle stopped briefly to pre-warn the other 4WD drivers about the intense conditions the rest of the way. Passing a river, all the vehicles needed to go through using a set path from the lead car.

The view along the way was just as I expected as dense rainforest conditions with muddy off road tracks dominated the other half of the journey to our base camp. At many times, we would stop to make sure everyone made it safely across treacherous stretches of mud. Finally after about three hours of intense driving, we arrived at the Tampoi Base Camp. The camp was basic with living quarters for the 20 odd staff there including our open aired bunk bed lodging. Yes, no two or three star hotel here in the middle of Borneo. Dinner was prepared for everyone at the main dining area and to my surprise, I noticed some of the rangers watching satellite television from a 40" LCD TV. Talk about modern technology in one of the most remote places in Sabah Borneo. After dinner, an introduction was done via power point about conservation work done in Imbak Canyon while our itinerary was set out for the following day.

Sleeping quarters at Tampoi Base Camp in Imbak

Some of the 4WD gang opted to camp out under the stars while the rest of us prepared our camera equipment before bed time at about 10pm. The conditions were really nice as I got to experience sleeping in a double bunk bed with mosquito netting under a structure without walls. Toilets were modern if you should be interested as they are behind the quarters and with 8 units. Only for those who cannot live without hot showers, everything else was great here.

To start the day, we woke up at about 5am to prepare for our journey to the Imbak Waterfalls. Previously, one had to trek there for about an hour but early in 2011, a driving trail was made. Along the way to the falls, you would be lucky if you bumped into a Borneo Pygmy Elephant but for my trip, I only saw what the elephant left behind on the trail. The ranger had told me that the elephant was there last night as the droppings were very fresh. Oh how I would have loved to bump into one of the mammals.

Gearing up to photograph the Imbak Waterfalls

Arriving at the Imbak Waterfalls, I could hear the beautiful sounds of water falling from a distance. We had to stop the vehicles and walk down a wooden staircase where my eyes could not imagine the size and length of these falls. Everyone was in awe when we saw it and some could not resist while pulling out their cameras clicking away. As everyone was making their way down the platform area, Cede and the rest of the rangers that followed us here gathered for a detailed briefing at the main platform area. This was crucial as all of us were first timers here.

Cede Prudente giving everyone a briefing about the place

We were all informed of the do's and dont's and what to look out for. As this is very deep into the conservation area, the nearest form of civilization was still 3-4 hours away. So we were informed to be cautious here. Leech socks were required for trekking while moving around the falls, we should be a tad careful. After the waterfall photography sessions, we were to trek into the BBC trail and camp which was over a hanging wooden bridge. It is here that you get to see some of the deep rainforest flora and fauna. As for animals, we heard a lot but they choose not to be seen while we were there.

Below are a series of pictures taken while we trekked carefully through the Imbak Conservation rainforest. You can click on the pictures to enlarge them.

When we returned back from the trek, we spent the afternoon at the waterfalls as many wanted to explore the different timings of the light for photography. Lunch was arranged and served at the platform while a few choose to have an afternoon siesta while the serious photographers were seen around the falls. Finishing a two hour session there, we headed back to camp for dinner. The evening was spent talking about everything and later in the night, Star Trail professional - Jollence Lee, gave a number of us a guide on how to photograph Star Trails. This was very informative and interesting. You can see an example of Jollence Lee Star Trails. Overall, this excursion had to be one of my most challenging and interesting rainforest adventures in a long while.

For those of you who are interested in experiencing this unique expedition, you need to know that only groups are received or you can get more details from Cede of North Borneo Safari in regards to the Photo Safaris that he organises around Sabah Borneo. For photographers, this is one of the trips that you should not miss from around the world. Shooting in remote Borneo inside a 35000 hectare conservation is something not many people will be able to do and now this option is available. You can get more details from below:

Malaysia Airlines New Airbus A380 Plane Picture - Sneak Preview

Malaysia Airlines New Airbus A380 Plane Picture - Sneak Preview of the air plane going through the 60% building phase. As you can see the body is in its original green and yellow coating and yet to be painted. The tail fin has already been fitted and painted with the Malaysia Airlines (MAS) logo. I was on an invitation to the Airbus Factory in Toulouse, France to witness the building process of the A380-800 plane at the at the Jean-Luc Lagardere station. While here, I also visited the delivery section where another Malaysia Airline Airbus A330 plane was ready for collection. The new Airbus A380 is one of the 6 planes which was ordered back in 2003 and this first unit is to be delivered by early 2012. Speculation on the routes are yet to be confirmed but it is most likely that the A380 will be used for the KL - London route. As for the interior design and seating capacity, tentatively it is set at 508 seats with a surprise for the business and first class seating design.

Nose, center and forward fuselage of the MAS A380 plane

From this process at station two where general tests on electric and hydraulic systems are conducted while mobile parts and landing gears are tested and then the four Rolls Royce Trent 900 engines will be fitted under the wings. Final checks will be conducted outside the hanger before the plane is sent to Hamburg for the final interior fittings and paint job.

Belly fairing for the A380 plane

As I was approaching the Malaysia Airlines A380 plane, I saw many of the parts which were to be fitted on to the plane along the main walkway. Some of them come in huge containers and they look systematically laid out like air-fix parts. As you can see in the picture above, that box was for the A380 belly fairing. The technician simply takes the entire container to the plane and fits them accordingly to the sections.

While in Paris, I also managed to attend the 49th Paris Air Show 2011 which was held in Le Bourget, France. My first international airshow and it was absolutely amazing.

Update: Malaysia Airlines Airbus A380 makes maiden test flight and lands in Hamburg, Germany - Oct 2011

The first unit of the MAS A380 Plane made a test flight from Toulouse, France and landed safely in Hamburg, Germany. Here are exclusive pictures of the Malaysia Airlines Airbus A380 Plane on Test Flight and Landing.

Tengku Azmil, CEO/MD for Malaysia Airlines

The CEO and MD of Malaysia Airlines, Tengku Azmil was also here during my visit and he gave a press release to the Malaysian media who were also present along with Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad (CEO of Malaysia Airports) and Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha, Minister in the Ministry of Transport Malaysia. With this, I along with many travelers are looking forward to the Malaysia Airlines New Airbus A380 Plane next year.

Tanah Lot Sunset in Bali Picture

Tanah Lot Sunset in Bali is my picture for this week. I took this shot while a Balinese fisherman was standing at the rocks. At the same time, the waves were coming in hard splashing against the rocks resulting in this beautiful picture. The location is on the right side of the temple in the distance. Taken with a 300mm lens on my beat up old Nikon D60.

For those heading here, note that this is one of the most popular tourist places in Bali and you can expect thousands of visitors during sunset. Also, make sure you come in slippers as getting on to the beach during the sunset, the waves start to come in. Sometimes, waves are quite big here at Tanah Lot in Bali.

Sitting Buddha Statue in Kelantan Picture

Sitting Buddha Statue in Kelantan is my picture of the week. This is the largest sitting Buddha statue in Asia and located in the small area of Tumpat in Kelantan, North East of Malaysia. The state also borders Thailand and has a stunning 26 Buddhist Temples in the area. The name of this temple is called Wat Machimmaran and was completed in the year 2000. It took skilled craftsmen from Thailand about 10 years to build this statue which is 30 meters high and 18 meters wide.

Beautiful temple grounds

For those who plane to visit this beautiful temple, the location of this is at a local village called Kampung Jubakar in Tumpat, Kelantan. The temple grounds also occupy an area of over 2.4 hectares which include many other smaller shrines. It is one of the places where popular celebrations like Wesak, Chinese Lunar New Year, Chai and Lakathor are held.

View of the Sitting Buddha Statue from the front of the temple

Coming here for the first time really made an impression for me. I was in awe when I saw how huge the statue was as having heard from friends, I assumed it was much smaller that this. Exploring the temple here found many other interesting sights which I will share in my upcoming article. As this is my picture of the week posting, you can also read about my Visiting Kota Bharu in Kelantan article. I had a field day photographing every part of this temple as there was hardly anyone here during my visit. Among my favourite pictures, I have to say it was the Sitting Buddha Statue in Kelantan.

Pantai Cenang Beach in Langkawi

Pantai Cenang Beach in Langkawi is the most popular place for travelers to visit. Well known for their complete infrastructure, the main beach stretches for about two kilometers with a wide assortment of accommodations and things to see and do. It is also located nearby the Langkawi Airport therefore getting here simply takes about ten minutes by taxi. As I have visited Pantai Cenang many times over the years, much has been improved in terms of lodging and shops which offer all kinds of services from mainstream shopping to travel agents.

The north part of Cenang Beach

Overall, the beach here is one of the most popular with many locals and foreigners due to the outstanding layout and accessibility. From the main Pantai Cenang Road, you just walk in about a hundred meters and you are on the main beach. A number of resorts, motels and guesthouses line the entire stretch so choices are abundant here. For the less pricy accommodations, they are located across the road inland.

One of the beach bars at pantai cenang

Nightlife in Pantai Cenang is also touted as the best place to have a great time. A number of bars and restaurants offering a variety of choices in food and beverages are found scattered along the main road. From Italian right to your regular 'mamak' (Indian Muslim) stall, there are also seafood restaurants to fancy five star dining options here. While pubs or bars are well spread here, you will find a couple of them located right on the beach while most of them are further towards the end of the road here.

As Langkawi is a duty free island, you can be assured of cheap prices for beers and liquors here. Most locals would be seen heading to Kuah town for the Langkawi Duty Free Shopping to buy loads of beer and then have barbecues and beach parties at Pantai Cenang.

Pantai Cenang Beach in Langkawi

Red Tomato at Pantai Cenang, Langkawi. One of the popular restaurants here

One of the must see views is Pantai Cenang in Langkawi from the plane just before you land. Make sure you are sitting on the right side of the plane for this. While staying here, you have the option to rent motorbikes, cars or bicycles to move around. Depending on how far you want to go around the island, you best double check. There are many restaurants of all sorts available here from Western, Chinese, Malay, Fusion right to halal Arabic food. Cafes and bars are also found along the main road but not as much as you would think. There are quite a number of convenient stores and a number of traditional massage centers here too.

One of the main attractions called Underwater World is also found along this main road. If you go right to the end of Pantai Cenang, you will come to a junction and take a right and immediately left, it leads further in to more restaurants, hotels, resorts and cafes. A place to check out here would be the Sun Cafe or Matahari, a Malay styled restaurant. Traveling all the way in would lead you pass the Holiday Villa Resort, Frangipani Resort and at the end, Awana Porto Malai Hotel which serves as one of the boat jetties.

Having been here many times over the years for work, I keep seeing much development being done only to make the place look more interesting. On my last visit, I came across a Cabin Hotel here which is made from container cabins. Quite different and reasonable. A visit to Langkawi Island will not be complete if you do not visit Pantai Cenang Beach.

Visiting Kota Bharu in Kelantan

Visiting Kota Bharu in Kelantan after four years ago brought back some minor memories of life on the East Coast of Malaysia. The last time I remember, Kota Bharu town was more on the laid back side while people here lived the much simpler life compared to those on the west coast cities. Most Malaysians have never visited this Islamic run state while those who have are either doing business or probably one of the rare few. Well, this trip made me want to come back again as things here are still pretty much untouched.

Arriving here via AirAsia flight, I saw the Kota Bharu Airport which donned an Islamic style architecture which was something different when landing at normal airports. After all, most airports around Malaysia have the standard conventional airport-look so this was something different. Our mini bus was waiting and we were sent straight to our hotel which was the new Tune Hotels Kota Bharu. A quick refreshing and we were off to do some sight seeing around the city.

Siti Khadijah Market in Kota Bharu town

The first place that we visited was the Siti Khadijah Market, a local wet market which is probably the most famous market in Malaysia due to the uniqueness of the layout. Locally called Pasar Besar Siti Khadijah, this is the main and central market for the city. Here, local produce is sold by mostly ladies who sit up on a platform while the market roof is a sky light where natural sunlight illuminates the entire main area of the market. Upstairs, dry good are found along with the famous Kelantan Serunding, a type of dry beef floss best eaten with bread or even rice.

Pickled Fruits or locally called Jeruk

Exploring the market in the late morning, many of the stalls were seen closing. The main reason was that these people start as early as four in the mornings. However, some took shifts to sell their goods as we spoke to one of the ladies selling 'jeruk' or pickled fruits. There must have been at least 20 types of local fruit pickled and sold in small to large jars. Apart from these, the Kelantanese are also well known for their sweet taste in desserts and also snacks.

Our next stop was the famous PCB Beach. Taking about 20 minutes to drive there, our tour guide gave us the full breakdown on the name change. It was formally called Beach of Passionate Love (Pantai Cinta Berahi) but until the PAS Muslim Government took over the state 20 years ago, they renamed it to Pantai Cahaya Bulan which means Moonlight Beach thus still retaining the acronym PCB Beach. Overall, the beach stretches for a good few kilometers and is a favourite place for locals and tourist. Come weekends, the place would be filled while on weekdays, it looks pretty nice and quiet.

Cikgu Nasi Ulam Kelantan

Heading back to Kota Bharu City, we were destined for lunch at one of Kelantan's famous rice stalls called Cikgu Nasi Ulam at the local Craft Village. Having sold his specialty rice for over four decades, it is now a local favourite from late mornings till late afternoons. Kelantanese dishes are served to you with rice and the stand drinks there are iced rose syrup in jugs.

Our day ended with attending the official opening of the Tune Hotels Kota Bharu where His Majesty Tengku Mahkota of Kelantan (Crown Prince) officiated this ceremony. The who and who of the state was seen there while CEO Mark Lancaster brought His Majesty for a full hotel tour and ended with a buffet dinner served at the hotel's cafe called Hayaki which is 24 hours. Overall the hotel has 172 rooms with a wheelchair friendly room. A 24 hour convenient store is by the side of the building while the general location proves very central as they are just behind the KB Mall in town.

A Wau seen at the Kelantan Cultural Center

The following day, we had an early start as we headed out to see some of  Kelantan's well known attractions. Stopping by the Gelanggang Seni or the Kelantan Cultural Center, we were greeted by the largest Wau (Kelantanese Kite) in the world. A traditional Wayang Kulit (Puppet Shadow Play) was line up inside the main hall and a backstage pass was given to photographers to see them perform this from behind the scenes. I have to admit, this is one of the best experiences I have had in a very long time. Seeing the Puppet Master (Tok Dalang) perform the play was incredibly mind blowing.

Right after the Wayang Kulit in Kelantan performance, we were treated to a traditional musical performance, a Silat Tari (Dancing Martial Art) and Gasing (Top Spinning) Show all at the Cultural Center here. The place is also located in the city area so getting here was easy. In the evening after dinner, a trip to Wakaf Che Yeh turned out to be something different as this is the largest open market selling all sorts of things. They operate till about midnight and you can find most local produce including items imported from Thailand.

Sleeping Buddha Temple in Kelantan

The following day, we went out of Kota Bharu to visit some of the unique temples found around Kelantan. Among them, there was the Sleeping Buddha and also the largest Sitting Buddha in Asia. They were about half an hour out of the city and something worth the visit. Apart from the main statues, there were stories told from the many other statues here. For the record, there are only about 35,000 Thai-Buddhist in Kelantan, but the amazing fact that there is about 26 Buddhist temples is outstanding. Many locals and Thais are seen visiting these temples throughout the year.

Batik Painting in Kelantan

On our last day, we made various stops at some of the famous Kelantanese food outlets. For lunch, we went to Yati Ayam Perchik which is a well known homegrown restaurant serving some of the best Ayam Perchik in Kelantan. Apart from the chicken served, they had an assortment of fish, beef, vegetables and a wide selection of local cakes. After lunch, we visited a Batik Factory which was towards the beach area where it was housed in a wooden makeshift factory. Inside, a local woman was finishing up some of the current designs for Batik. Next up, a visit to the local seaside village of Kampung Laut where we saw local fishermen come in with the days catch and then sold to the locals who patiently waited for boats to arrive back from the morning catch.

Nasi Kerabu at Hayaki Cafe, Tune Hotels Kota Bharu

Among the many different foods we tried were the famous Murtabak DiRaja, Cendol Pulut Tapai, Nasi Kerabu, Nasi Dagang and Nasi Tumbuk. One of the places worth a visit in the day or night is the White House Coffeeshop in town. This nostalgic coffee shop serves Kelantan's best coffee, eggs and toast and has been there for over 40 years. We also managed to get a glimpse of Kelantans 'night life' when one of our dinners was held at a local Chinese Restaurant. Local Chinese Kelantanese people were seen happily having their beers outside the restaurant while chatting away. We also had a taste of Kelantanese-Thai cuisine at Sri Chengmai Restaurant with Tourism Malaysia officials and a special guest of honor who was Haziq of AF4 (Local Celebrity)

Another lunch at a place called Restaurant Hover in town which served Nasi Sumarta was also a very interesting place to eat at. Food selections was very impressive and yet different. The highlight was seeing the person in charge count your bill. Words cannot explain this therefore if you visit this place, please go for the experience. A visit to one of the Serunding Makers of Kelantan was educational as we witnessed the full process of how the cooked dried meat is done.

A common Kelantanese Fishing Boat

Apart from the general places we visited throughout our 3 full days there, I have to to say that the local food was highly recommended during our visit to Kelantan. I must have put on at least another three kilograms on this trip but personally, I think they Kelantanese have some of the countries best local foods. You can also take a look at my Images Of Kelantan on my facebook album for more pictures. A kind thank you goes out to Tune Hotels Kota Bharu and Tourism Malaysia for organising this trip where I can easily say that is was a very interesting and educational trip for me, not forgetting the food we had five times a day. Also a special thanks to the Tourism Information Center for the incredible show at Gelanggang Seni (Cultural Center). You will also find that the hotel in the center of town is convenient and easy in terms of logistics for those who are planning on Visiting Kota Bharu in Kelatan.
