Le Tour De Langkawi 2011

Le Tour De Langkawi 2011 which starts on the Island of Langkawi and ends at Kuala Lumpur is my first time experiencing this live. I flew down to Langkawi on the 22nd January to witness this unique bicycling race and it is my first time seeing the race live from the start to the finish. Starting at the Dataran Helang (Eagle Square) in Kuah town, the race went through a scenic Langkawi passing various villages, fields, beaches and rainforest roads. The race eventually ended in Kuah Town where 23 teams from around the world took part in the 2011 Le Tour De Langkawi

As I was under a third party contractor covering a certain brand involved here, I was fortunate enough to get close to the racers and team before the start of the race. For the record, the race starts in Langkawi Island as the first stage and then moves to the main land to make their way down to the capital Kuala Lumpur. Racers will be heading from town to town using the inner trunk roads with beautiful scenery while challenging stages include climbing Cameron Highlands and Genting Highlands.

Here are some of the various pictures taken during the Tour De Langkawi stage on the 23rd January 2011 during my 24 hour visit to this beautiful island. Click on the pictures to see them in Full Size.

For Stage One of the Le Tour De Langkawi, the weather was perfect with clear blue skies and all racers completed the circuit in about 2 hours and 15 minutes. There were hardly any bubbles throughout the race as all teams were up to their pace. As the race has moved to the mainland of Malaysia, we look forward to more excitement during the hill climbs. Hopefully I can provide you more pictures during this event. Follow the links below for more updates.

Phulay Bay Beach in Krabi Picture of the Week

Phulay Bay Beach in Krabi is my Picture of the Week. This beautiful setting was taken at the beach area of the Phulay Bay Ritz Carlton Reserve, a 6 Star Resort in Krabi, Thailand which is under the luxurious Ritz Carlton Group. Located at a private and secluded spot facing the Andaman Sea, this exclusive sanctuary offers Resort and Ocean Pavilions, Beach Villas, Reserve Villas and Royal Villas which are all sea facing and totally private.

The creative beach chair in the picture is part of Chomtawan - a Sunset Bar facing the Andaman Sea catering to guests who want to relax while watching the evening sun set for the day. For those who want to get away from it all and have a real quiet holiday, you could consider the Phulay Bay, A Ritz Carlton Reserve in Krabi.

Islands to visit in Malaysia for 2011

Islands to visit in Malaysia for 2011 is a compilation of some of the the best islands around the country. Family holiday, backpacking, romantic getaway, traveling with kids, diving and snorkeling or simply to relax, these islands are broken down with basic information and are in no particular order. The islands are also  located around Malaysia including Sabah Borneo. Seriously, when was the last time you had a decent  tropical island escape? I hope with this list, you will make some interesting choices in planning your island holiday here in Malaysia.

Rawa Island or Pulau Rawa
This unique island is located just off the town of Mersing on route to Tioman Island and is a private island with only two accommodations. One called Rawa Safaris Resort which is the popular choice while the other is known as Alang's Rawa which is a backpacker style lodging here. When you talk about White Sand Beaches, it is all here at Pulau Rawa. Fantastic for couples, families and backpackers. Can get crowded during local holiday seasons and is part of the monsoon season. Best visited during April - September.

Sipadan Island or Pulau Sipadan
Malaysia's top diving destination and located on the east side of Sabah Borneo, Sipadan Islands are one of the must-dive places for most scuba divers and rated one of the most beautiful dive spots in the world. Up till a few years ago, the government has stopped any form of accommodation on the main island due to environment reasons. Nowadays, divers stay at nearby Mabul or Kapalai Island while 120 daily dive permits are issued out to divers for diving at Sipadan Islands. Not a place where you would bring your family but if everyone dives, why not. Accommodations range from budget lodge style right till 5-Star Resorts at Mabul Island and Kapalai Island. A marine police station is the only structure that is on Sipadan Island. Check for the rainy season.

Langkawi Island or Pulau Langkawi
Peninsular Malaysia's largest island with the best infrastructure and most importantly, Langkawi is a duty free island! A very popular place for travelers as they have direct flights landing in Langkawi Island from a number of airlines around the region. The island offers all kinds of tourism from Eco to Culture and Heritage apart from the general beach life. The Langkawi Cable Car is one of the attractions you should not miss while here. Accommodations range from luxurious resorts like the Four Seasons and Datai Resort to budget style hotels and motels found throughout the island. One unique place to look out for is Malibest Resort with the Treehouse Chalets.  Peak period here is Nov to Feb and June to Aug for the Arab Season.

Sapi Island in Sabah

Sapi Island or Pulau Sapi
This small island which is part of the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park is only 15 minutes from Kota Kinabalu town  in Sabah Borneo and there are boats going and coming from the mainland every other hour. A very popular place for day trippers as there are no lodgings here. Most packages include a lunch, snorkeling and just relaxing on the beach. Not as busy as sister island Manukan but does get crowded on weekends. Sapi Island has some of the best waters and beach here. Local attraction is the huge monitor lizards that look like Komodo Dragons.

Perhentian Island or Pulau Perhentian
One of the most sought after island for all kinds of beach and island travelers. From the locals right to the backpackers, Perhentian has always been a popular destination to visit. Many budget style to moderate resorts are available on both - Perhentian Besar and Perhentian Kecil islands. Activities include diving, snorkeling and just relaxing. No roads or vehicles so moving around via foot of boat here. chances of spotting turtles while snorkeling are high while there are many pretty scuba diving spots here. Some of the family run budget resorts in Perhentian are the best to stay at. Can get crowded during the peak seasons and is part of the monsoon season. Best visited during April - September.

Mantanani Island or Pulau Mantanani
This is one of the most beautiful islands on the west side of Sabah Borneo. Generally a divers paradise as there are only two or three resorts here that cater specially to this sport. You would not expect a family style resort and activities here. Getting to Mantanani Island is also not as easy as thought. You would need to book your trip via the travel agent that arranges these special trips. A paradise in its own way and a must for the true island lover.

Turtle Island Beach

Turtle Island or Pulau Selingan
Turtle island is one of the most unique islands dedicated to conservation for Turtles, this place is located about an hour from the town of Sandakan in Sabah Borneo. Only one resort is available on this island while overnight trips offer curious guests a chance to see turtles laying eggs on the beaches around the island here. A Turtle hatchery is also available on this island while there is a conservation center with marine park rangers who look after this. Excellent for kids, family, those interested in marine life and conservation. No monsoon but check for rainy weather.

Redang Island

Redang Island or Pulau Redang
The only island in the east cost of Malaysia with an airstrip makes this place a popular destination for many locals. Many 3-5 star resorts are found at Redang Island as the waters and beaches here are beautiful. One of the resorts, Laguna Redang Resort seems to stand out from the rest here while the Berjaya Resort Redang is located in a cove by it's own away from the main stretch. For the snorkelers, there is the Redang Marine Park nearby which is a popular place to visit. A Small conservation center is also set up here and one can have a  barbecue on the beaches on this island. Can get crowded during local holiday seasons and is part of the monsoon season. Best visited during April - September.

Rebak Island Beach

Rebak Island or Pulau Rebak
An island off an island, Rebak Island is a private island and about 10 minutes from Langkawi Island. There is only one 5-star resort called the Rebak Island Resort which is managed by the TAJ Group. Those seeking privacy and some quiet time would be pleased to know Rebak Island is one of those places. A marina sits at the main jetty of the island while the island is rich in nature.

Lang Tengah Island or Pulau Lang Tengah
Located in between Redang and Perhentian Island, this beautiful island caters to three resorts and some lovely diving spots. One of the Resorts at Lang Tengah called Redang Lang Resort caters to more locals with a lodge style accommodation and not your resort type. Can get crowded during the local holiday seasons and is part of the monsoon season. Best visited during April - September.

Manukan Island Sabah

Manukan Island or Pulau Manukan
The most popular of the five islands that make up the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park in Kota Kinabalu Sabah Borneo. This island is located only 15 minutes from the main town of Kota Kinabalu or KK as most people call it. Only one Resort on Manukan Island is available to those who want to stay over but the prices are in the slightly higher side. Halong Bay Cruise Boat Picture of the Week

Halong Bay Cruise Boat is my Picture of the Week. I took this picture while I was on board another Vietnamese Junk Boat doing the day cruise around Halong Bay. During my trip there in April 2010, I went for both cruises - the Halong Bay Day Cruise and Halong Bay Overnight Cruise. The reason for this was that I wanted to fully experience the entire UNESCO World Heritage Site and it was something that I had never planned to do until I got there. Seriously, if you are visiting Ha Long Bay and have the extra time, I would recommend trying this.

During the day cruise, I visited the Thien Cung Caves of Halong Bay and apparently, the overnight cruise I took the following day did not visit this cave. So it was a worthwhile experience if you ask me. Just for the record, when I took the day cruise, I booked the entire Vietnamese Junk Boat to myself for only VD500,000. This has to be the best bargain throughout my Vietnam trip and during my Halong Bay Cruise.

Matta Fair 2011 Packages

Sabah Travel Packages at Matta Fair 2011

One of the highlights are to look out for the Sabah Tourism Booth at the fair where you will be happy to know that there are a number of interesting packages to Sabah being offered here. One prominent agent - Equator Tours, is having a fantastic promotion for Mabul and Sipadan Island Packages, Kota Kinabalu City Packages and the most unique - Maliau Basin Packages. If you have been waiting for something different offered by Sabah, you should look up Mr.Pat from Equator Tours as they seem to be selling some of the most unique Sabah Travel Packages at Matta Fair 2011.

This year would also see many of the smaller travel agents offering competitive travel packages for the single or family travelers.  Expect to see a lot of Muslim Travel Packages from many agencies while places like Hong Kong, Singapore, New Zealand , Paris and Japan will be hot items to look out for. Over the border packages like to Hat Yai and Singapore's Universal Studio Packages will also be quite popular due to the savings some of the travel agents are receiving from the counterparts. With AirAsia flying to New Zealand and to Paris soon, you will be seeing many  New Zealand Packages and Paris Packages which will be much cheap er than last year but with AirAsia flights included in this.

Also to keep an eye out for is FireFly as they now operate from the KLIA Main Hub and fly to East Malaysia. So prices for air fares to Kuching and Kota Kinabalu may be on sale. Update: Apparently Firefly is offering some really cheap flights to Kuching.

Muslim Travel Packages

Relatively still new in the industry, many Muslims are now looking at these special Halal Packages being offered to Mulsim travelers. Some of them even offer Muslim Packages to China whole there are custom Muslim Packages to Europe, USA and even the Middle East. Last year, I personally saw a few travel agents selling Muslim travel packages to Hanoi, Australia and even Hong Kong. So this year, I wonder where is the popular destination for this special travel group.

Muslim Packages at Matta Fair

Best Deals in Matta Fair 2011

Honestly, for the best deals in Matta Fair 2011, you have to probably visit the place either on the last two days or all three days. Check out the offers and promotions that each of the travel companies are offering as sometimes on the last day, some companies may even throw in extra for your packages. While most of the time when you sit and discuss your plans with the travel agent, they may even offer you special offers to try and secure your travel package.

Cheap Airline Tickets at Matta Fair 2011

This is one of the many popular things travelers are on the lookout for. If you walk around, you will notice that some travel companies actually advertise Hong Kong for RM600 on a piece of A4 paper stuck to their booth. You might think it is a deal but actually it is only for the flight ticket. So, if you are those hunting for cheap airline tickets, always ask them if it is a full package or just airline ticket.

Ground Package at Matta Fair 2011

Another deceiving package being sold openly here. You MUST always ask them if the price you see is for Ground Package (meaning only the hotel/tours/transfers) or the Full Package (inclusive of air tickets/hotel/tour).

Muslim destinations offered for the Muslim Tours at Matta Fair

I will update more information when I get it here so please bookmark this page. You can subscribe to my page from the top right corner or follow me on Facebook or Twitter for updates.

Getting to Matta Fair 2011 at PWTC
  • Most locals would self drive there and park around the PWTC area.
  • Here's a tip if you don't want to spend time looking for parking - Drive up to the Seri Pacific Hotel (old Pan Pacific Hotel) entrance and give your car to the valet parking which cost about RM15 (US$4.40) the entire day. No hassles as you simply walk straight into the Matta Fair from the hotel entrance.

  • Visitors who travel to the Matta Fair 2011 from March 11 to 13 at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) on Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) trains will receive a 25% discount on their ticket fare.
  • They should inform the officers at the ticketing counter at the train station that they are going to KL Sentral for the Matta Fair before buying their tickets. Those who buy tickets at the KTMB booth for travel to any part of the country or Singapore would get the 25% discount regardless of the number of people traveling. The discounts are available from March 11 to 13th 2011.
  • STAR LRT stops at the PWTC Station and is a short walk to the Matta Fair.
