Marina Bay Sands Singapore Light Show

Marina Bay Sands Singapore Light Show which was held on the evening of 24th June 2010 for the Opening Celebrations of the Sands SkyPark was something that totally amazed me. This incredible light show was best witnessed from across the Marina Bay Sands Hotel nearby the Fullerton Esplanade or the Merlion in Singapore.

Dazzling light display at the Marina Bay Sands Light Show

As I had to choose between the Kelly Rowland Concert or the Light Show, my choice was pretty obvious, I headed to the Fullerton Esplanade at about 6pm to get the best possible spot to shoot this. And to my surprise, it was pretty amazing. I am sure the pictures here show how awesome it was. Lights were strategically placed throughout the Marina Bay Sands building and area while the show started with a few simple lights which gradually more lights came into play during this 15 minute light display.

Incredible ending for the Light Show at Marina Bay Sands Singapore

The highlight of the Light Show was when all the lights came together creating a myriad of colors dominating the skies and ended with a flame show from the ArtScience Museum at Marina Bay Sands. The flames would appear to be dancing around and ending with all the flames together. Not forgetting the changing lights of the Sands Convention Center, the roof would change colours every few seconds. I have to admit that this was one of the best light shows I have seen so far and my hats off to the lighting designer for this amazing display that dazzled everyone from the Fullerton Esplanade and Merlion.

Marina Bay Sands Light Show Video in Singapore

The video above shows you how beautiful the Marina Bay Sands Light Show in Singapore was. I am currently unaware if they are still having the Light Show nightly or weekly but I would love to see them do it on a nightly basis for everyone to enjoy especially the visiting tourist to Marina Bay Sands or Singapore. If you are visiting Singapore, I recommend you visit the Marina Bay Sands Integrated Resort here as it is perfect for just about everyone.

I understand that since the opening, the MBS has hosted a number of massive events and also multiple light shows or fireworks displays. For Christmas and New Year Celebrations, this is one of the places to visit and catch some of the amazing fireworks show in Singapore.

Shanghai Food in Kuala Lumpur at JW Marriott

Shanghai Food in Kuala Lumpur at JW Marriott - I had heard about the Shanghai Restaurant some time ago but never did get the chance to explore the cuisines offered here until recently. To my surprise, this award-winning restaurant serving authentic Shanghai food with a touch of local fusion has been around for a good decade and is located on the first floor of the JW Marriott Hotel in Kuala Lumpur. With an invitation from a very good friend, I was here for the Shanghainese Homestyle Specialties prepared by Master Chef Wong Wing Yuek.

Beautiful setting at Shanghai Restaurant, JW Marriott

Upon arrival, the first thing that caught my eye was the Oriental decoration and ambiance of the place. Deep red carpet and chairs with Chinese paintings and motifs lined the wall giving me the impression that I was in an old Chinese movie set from back in the day.

Shanghai Restaurant dining hall

Built into a circular room, there are three private rooms with seating for ten while the main hall can easily accommodate up to 120 people. The tables come in round and square so even if you are a company of two or single, there are available tables for you.

Experiencing the Shanghainese Homestyle Specialties, the course started with an amazing bowl of Double-boiled supreme stock with water chestnuts pork ribs, dried scallops, sweet corn and carrots (RM25.00 per bowl). The pork ribs were cooked perfectly and tender, and together with the sweetness of the corn and scallops, this soup is intense on flavour yet refreshing to taste.

Next was the Spinach with bean curd, shredded dried scallop, mushrooms and carrots (RM6.00 per person) beautifully displayed in little bowls. These are very fresh-and-light-tasting, the spinach is crisp, and easily consumed in two to three mouthfuls.

A dish that totally caught my eye was the Steamed whole pumpkin with Pork Ribs (RM48.00). Visually it was very unique and after tasting it, the visual and taste just came into place.

Next, the waitress brought in the Stir-fried bamboo shoots with ham and bean curd leaves (RM48.00). For a moment, I thought they were some sort of Chinese noodles but I was clearly wrong. This dish was very impressive as the taste was just out of this world.

After a mouthful of various Shanghainese dishes, the Deep-fried bean curd with prawn paste and French goose liver (RM13.00 per piece) was served. Now, this dish was very unique and biting through the bean curd, I tasted the marriage of prawn paste and goose liver and it was an explosive experience.

I could have sworn that they were lotus roots when the server put this dish down on the table but after a brief explanation from the server that this was actually bread, I was absolutely impressed. This dish is Steamed lotus root roll with glutinous rice (RM3.00 per piece) and to my surprise, there was not an overdose of the glutinous rice at all. The combined taste was perfect in my opinion while the bread was soft inside and crispy on the outside.

As we sat through dinner here at Shanghai Restaurant, I have to admit that each time a dish was brought in, I could not help but curiously peer at their unique creations. A Steamed whole orange with papaya (RM12.00 per piece) was served in a foiled glass where the top of the orange was cut perfectly to reveal the contents inside. This tangy sweet dessert has an appealing orange and papaya combination with a hint of  osmanthus flower.

Famous Siu Loong Pau

Finally, before calling it a night, I just had to try out the much recommended Shanghai Dumpling also known as Siu Loong Pau (Xiao Long Bao) served at Shanghai Restaurant. We ordered one dumpling each and it was served in this cute little wooden dumpling holder. I have to admit, it is as good as they say after trying it. I would recommend this to everyone.

Beautiful table setting against a huge Chinese painting

Overall, the dishes are very unique and yet reminded me of the warmth of a home-cooked meal, especially starting with a double-boiled soup at this restaurant.

All the special dishes are created  personally by Master Chef Wong Wing Yeuk who originates from Shanghai, China and who has over 12 years experience at this restaurant, apart from his 30-year cooking experience in Shanghai, Hong Kong and now Kuala Lumpur.

For your added information, the Shanghainese Homestyle Specialties menu is only available from July 14th till July 19th 2010 at Shanghai Restaurant in JW Marriott, Kuala Lumpur. This is also a non-halal restaurant.

Infinity Swimming Pool Videos at Sands Skypark Singapore

Infinity Swimming Pool Videos from Sands Skypark at Marina Bay Sands Singapore. Here are some videos taken during the official opening of the Sands SkyPark on the 24th June 2010 which was only for invited media while the public was allowed to start visiting this place the following day. The most unique thing to hit the island in a very long time was the Infinity Swimming Pool which stretches for 150 meters along the Sands SkyPark and gave hotel guest breath-taking views of the city's skyline from the pool with an illusion of falling off the edge of the pool.

Sands SkyPark video showing the skyscrapers around Singapore

Sands SkyPark will be home to the world's longest elevated  infinity swimming pool, with a 475-foot vanishing edge. The pools will be composed of 400,000 pounds of stainless steel and hold 380,000 gallons (or 1440 cubic meters) of water which are elevated 975 feet above the ground. There are four movement joints beneath the main pools which are designed to help the pools withstand the natural motion of the towers, and each joint has a unique range of motion.

The place can also accommodate 3,900 people and the beautifully landscaped garden areas contain over 250 trees and 650 plants, some up to 8 meters tall. Impressive Hotel at Old Quarter in Hanoi

Impressive Hotel at Old Quarter in Hanoi. The easiest and hardest thing to do is to find a hotel, especially one that would make our trip hassle–free and enjoyable. The reason? “There are more than 400 hotels in Hanoi, maybe more now. More and more are coming up every year” Michael told us, him being one of the owner of Impressive Hotel. In fact, he is also expanding his business next door with another hotel, which is currently being reconstructed as we chat with him on our first day in Hanoi.

For me, a hotel can make or break your holiday, and I am thrilled that Impressive hotel has met many of my expectations. On certain matters, they even exceed them I am pleased to say. Read on and you will find out why.

Impressive Hotel main entrance in Hanoi

There are seven floors (which means eight floors in Malaysia) at Impressive Hotel, and we stayed on the second floor (first floor). In Vietnam, the ground floor is the first floor. Yes there is a good condition lift at the hotel, no worries. I find that staying on the second floor is rather convenient as we can reach our room quickly without waiting for the lift. However, we always like to stay and chat with the staff as they are very friendly and eager to help anytime.

We got a lot of useful information on where to eat, directions to places, the local language and most important the local prices. Not only do they speak good English, one of them speak fluent French too. Michael who is a working owner speaks three to four languages, English, Vietnamese, Cantonese and Mandarin which I find very helpful in the hotel business here in Vietnam.

LCD TV with Personal Computer and free Internet

The best thing I like about this hotel is that the room comes with a personal computer equipped with  free internet! Of course it is also clean and everything looks brand new as the hotel is only a few months old. The second thing I personally like are the abundance of hangers in the closet without having to request for them. Even 5-stars hotels provide one or two hangers at most and it is such a hassle to request for eight more hangers without sounding like a troublesome guest! For guests who are staying more than a few days, I am certain the hangers will be much appreciated!

The extremely spacious and well decorated rooms also come with breakfast, which is a choice of Baguette or Beef/Chicken Soup Noodles with coffee/tea and fruits. If you feel like it, you can even request for breakfast in the room!

As for the location of the boutique hotel, it is within walking distance, about a 5-8 minute walk to the famous St Joseph Cathedral and The Old Quarter of Hanoi. Just outside the hotel are convenience shops, hair saloon, shops selling souvenirs, local restaurants and women selling local fruits in baskets. Do try the Vietnamese pineapple as they are sweet and tasty!  Some nearby cafes and shops open till late about 11pm so supper is just around the corner if you are hungry.

View of St.Josephs Cathedral from the room balcony

If you would like a room with a view, the hotel has rooms on the upper floors which has magnificent views of the Cathedral. Of course, these rooms come in a higher rate than the other rooms. The back rooms are equally stunning as you get to catch some of Hanoi's amazing sunsets from your room window.

Mini restaurant area at the lobby

Tours are also organised by Impressive Hotel which include Halong Bay, Sapa and Hanoi town and vicinity. We went for a Halong Bay Overnight Cruise, and it was an amazing experience that we would recommend to everyone who is going to Hanoi. The prices vary for different junks to Halong Bay, so do let them know what you prefer.

Actual sunset taken by me from the 7th floor room at Impressive Hotel

Impressive Hotel is also a Boutique Hotel and provides multiple additional services for travelers. If you need to change currency, you can do so by asking the reception. Rates are very reasonable and better than most places out there. A personal computer is available in the lobby for all guests to use while there is Free WiFi in the entire lobby area for those with iPhones or Laptops. Overall, the experience here was amazing and you have my word for that.

Holiday Villa Halong Bay Tuan Chau Island

Holiday Villa Halong Bay was the perfect choice of stay when I visited Vietnam in May 2010. Not only was it strategically located nearby the world famous UNESCO Site of Halong Bay, it was also located on the well known resort island of Tuan Chau which is about two kilometers from Halong City and Halong Bay.

    Landscape around Holiday Villa

Getting to the Holiday Villa Halong Bay was relatively easy as it is off the main road leading to Halong City and Ha Long Bay. You cannot miss the grand arch into Tuan Chau Island which is about two kilometers before Halong City where the main area and jetty to Halong Bay is.

Holiday Villa Halong Bay reception area

On arrival here, I was immediately greeted by the reception and taken to the lounge area where I waited for the general manager. I have to say, the Holiday Villa Halong Bay was quite impressive for a recently acquired resort. Most of the fittings were from the original resort while minor additions were added to make the place stand out. You get a very warm feeling once you step inside the main resort building.

Tuan Chau Bar at Holiday Villa

A lounge bar (Tuan Chau Bar) with a pool table is also by the main reception where the welcome drinks were served and it was here that I met John Kirim, the General Manager of Holiday Villa Tuan Chau Island and to my surprise, he was also a Malaysian so this was perfect!

    Holiday Villa garden area

The entire resort grounds covers a vast area of 220 hectares with lots of greenery and beautiful villa units located almost everywhere. Most of the best view villas are found on the hillside of the resort. A walk to to top of the hill will take you about 10-15 minutes while usually the resort buggy will shuttle you up and down. A total of 220 rooms and suites are also available at the Holiday Villa Tuan Chau Island.

The resort has about four buggies to send guest around the grounds but I only used them once to get to the top of the hill. Mr.John took me on one of these on a sight seeing tour of Tuan Chau Island and it was very interesting to see how much is being done here. Just so you know, the Miss Universe 2008 was also held at this resort.

Holiday Villa Tuan Chau Swimming Pool, Halong Bay in background

Back inside the Holiday Villa, they have their own private beach and a swimming pool that faces Halong Bay. The pool comes with a jacuzzi section and there is a pool bar by the side. Families are usually seen having a fun time here but I missed the opportunity as I did not have my swim wear this time around.

Seafront villa bedroom at Holiday Villa

On checking into my sea facing villa unit, I found it to be extremely spacious. This was a first floor unit with a view of the garden and a little of Halong Bay and the sea. There were doors on each side of the villa that opened out to a balcony and this made it even more roomy.

Really large bathroom at Holiday Villa

The bathroom was an extra surprise as it was one of the largest bathrooms I have even seen. A jacuzzi bath at one corner while the standard bathroom amenities were available. Outside the bathroom, a double cupboard held bath robes, umbrella and slippers. Free WiFi is also available for all rooms, you need to get the password from the main reception.

For entertainment, a 32 inch LCD TV broadcasts satellite television with sports, world news, movies and even local Vietnamese channels. A digital safe box and mini bar is also available under the TV while complimentary coffee, tea and bottled water is available.

At night, you can simply walk around the resort and admire the surroundings. Note that there are no shops or other restaurants nearby except for those at the Tuan Chau Entertainment area on the island. For those seeking a little pampering, you can also check out the Tuan Chau Spa at the resort. Full packages are available right down to foot massages and a hair wash for the ladies.

Actual view of Halong Bay from Hillside Villas at holiday Villa Tuan Chau

On my exploration around the Holiday Villa grounds, we made our way up to the highest point of the resort where spectacular views of Halong Bay could be seen. One of the best villa units can be found up here with non obstructing views of Halong Bay.

Tuan Chau Restaurant at Holiday Villa

Tuan Chau Restaurant is the main restaurant offering you a variety of cuisines ranging from local Vietnamese, Asian and to International. The restaurant on the first floor of the main building also offers fantastic dining views of Halong Bay on one side while the other sees the beautiful garden view. The place is also well known for their seafood selections and is the common breakfast area.

    Seafood Steamboat at Holiday Villa

What impressed me most was the portions that were served. They were really huge compared to the normal sized dishes I am used to. The picture above is a portion of fresh seafood steamboat for one person. Prices are very reasonable too. One thing I would like to highlight is that the Executive Chef here is a Malaysian,  therefore the food here is halal for the Muslim travelers. There is no pork served here.

Almost everyday, we had our breakfast and dinner here at the Tuan Chau Restaurant sitting at the table by the window overlooking Halong Bay and the swimming pool with the gentle Halong breeze blowing in. Note that this is a smoking restaurant and the windows are opened for the summer here.

Having a long habit for trying burgers on my travels, I could not resist when I saw they offered one. Without hesitation, I ordered it and let me tell you, it was one of the nicest burgers I have had in a while. Just look at the size of it in the picture above. I would give it a seven out of ten on my Southeast Asian burger quest.

My conclusion - Holiday Villa Halong Bay is the perfect place if you have a family with children or a couple seeking a beautiful yet interesting holiday in Halong Bay. The resort also is the perfect place for MICE, Company Trips or Holidays and Team Building events. Because it is located on the stand alone island of Tuan Chau, you can expect ultimate privacy here.

Tuan Chau Island is well known for its entertainment and recreation activities. An huge entertainment complex which can seat up to 2,000 people holds dolphin and seal shows, a high tech water fountain with music, laser lighting and film showing on the water screen and a crocodile show. A newly built jetty that offers cruises to Halong Bay, a 4km man-made beach with local cafes and restaurants, a large building with ferry and cruise counters, a modern karaoke club and disco making this island a destination for locals and also foreign travelers.
