Bukit Melapi Lodge Sukau Kinabatangan River Sabah

Bukit Melapi Lodge Sukau Kinabatangan River Sabah

Bukit Melapi Lodge is located along the Sukau Kinabatangan River in Sabah and was one of the nicer places to stay at during my Kinabatangan River Wildlife Safari. Arriving at the main jetty of the Bukit Melapi Lodge was something out of the ordinary from the usual resorts. We were picked up from a village jetty after a two hour drive from Sandakan town and ushered here in a ten minute speed boat ride along the famous Kinabatangan River of Sabah.

Bukit Melapi Lodge Proboscis Bar

Bukit Melapi Lodge or Proboscis Lodge has it's own jetty and so do the other river lodges along the Kinabatangan River and as we approached the large wooden covered jetty, the staff from the resort were waiting to welcome us and carry our luggage up to the main reception which was entirely made out of rich wood. First impression - Welcome to Nature, and here we were right in the middle of it. A local Malay lady who spoke excellent English welcomed us with a glass of juice and cold towel and after a quick briefing about the place, lunch was served ala local Sabahan style.

Nature books for guest reading provided by the lodge

Bukit Melapi Lodge was pretty impressive as walking around after lunch, I noticed they had a small gift shop and a mini library dedicated to all things nature and wildlife around the Kinabatangan Sukau district and Sabah in general. These books were for guests reading pleasure and were not sold. I have to say, this was something really great that the lodge provided especially when you are in the middle of the Kinabatangan Sukau River.

Entertainment room at Bukit Melapi Lodge

A quick tour around the lodge was next by my senior nature guide, Ben. For entertainment there was a room upstairs the main restaurant and bar area where guests could indulge in a serious session on Karaoke or simply have a game of pool or foosball. The entertainment room is air-conditioned by the way so no humidity here. This is one of the popular places after dinner where guests would bring their drinks and socialize with other travelers and guests.

Meal times at Bukit Melapi Lodge

Staying here showed me what true nature and Eco-Tourism was all about. Meal times were pretty much set as the entire day, one would be out either on the boats doing the Kinabatangan River Cruise or trekking inland. Apart from the nature and adventure provided here, there is absolutely nothing else to do but relax. Did I mention that you are in the middle of the Kinabatangan Sukau River? Yes, nothing but pure nature here.

Another chalet unit in the rainforest of Kinabatangan

I have to admit that the chalet units here at Bukit Melapi Lodge were really good. Not your 4-5 star hotel or resort style but it was basic with good amenities included. We were given one of the units that were facing the Kinabatangan River with a balcony and air conditioned with attached bathroom and it was beautiful.

River view chalet unit at Bukit Melapi Lodge

Our cozy chalet had two single beds, very spacious with good wood finishing and it was more than I expected. The chalet units are pretty spaced between each other too where there was a distance of about 20 feet apart.

View from inside the river view chalet

The view from the chalet room would be classified as Grade 1 view - why? Because it sees nothing but nature, river and green. I swear to you, this is one balcony I really enjoyed while staying here. The Kinabatangan River is about 100 meters from the chalet if you should know.

Sitting at the balcony of the chalet was such an experience as the natural sounds of the rainforest just surrounded you like a DOLBY Surround System. I spent good quality time here minus technology for two full days. No phone, no lap top or computer, no facebook or twitter, nothing.

I must give the Melapi Lodge credit for taking the extra effort in preparing the chalet rooms as the bath towels were prepared in a rose or flower formation. Beds were decently comfortable while the blankets were sufficient for the night.

The attached bathrooms were plain, simple and fully tiled. They were also clean and water pressure was decent. Another thumbs up for the bathroom and toilet as they met the typical traveler standard.

Kinabatangan River View chalet units

Seriously, the chalets here are astounding. Most of them have the Kinabantangan River view while a few of them are garden view. I suggest you take the river view ones when you book your package.

Melapi Lodge Garden Chalet Units

Melapi Lodge family chalet units

Family rooms are available here where there is a double bed and a single bed. Easily ready to house 4 to 5 people on request. These rooms have the field view of the place and is equally comfortable.
Balcony of the family chalet unit

One of the highlights of the family rooms are that you may even experience seeing the Borneo Pygmy Elephants from a distance. According to the manager, many guests staying at the family chalets have witnessed the Pygmy Elephants roaming the surroundings of the lodge. A priceless experience if you ask me.

Local dishes served for lunch

The food served is really something to shout about. I am not kidding. We were served a selection of the best local 'Orang Sungai' (River People) delicacies here. Mouth-watering Sabah food which was cooked by a local chef using local herbs and such. Not to worry as they also provide some Western food for the guests here.

A Pied Hornbill sits on a branch at the Melapi Lodge

Roaming the Melapi Lodge area will pull a few surprises. One of them was the sighting of the Pied Hornbills which make the resort grounds their sleeping haunt. At one occasion, I must have seen at least ten of them making loud Hornbill sounds before retiring to bed. They start to appear around 6pm at the Melapi Lodge.

Leaf Insect from Sabah Borneo on my hand

Finally, my conclusion to the Bukit Melapi Lodge - This place is a MUST if you want decent occupancy while exploring the Kinabatangan-Sukau Conservation. It may be a little higher priced than the other lodges, but you can be sure of quality service with proper accommodations. I absolutely enjoyed my stay here with no regrets at all.

Bukit Melapi Lodge or Proboscis Lodge is located along the Kinabatangan River in the Sukau District of Sandakan. Getting here is easily arranged by most tour operators and tour agencies. You MUST have a allocated tour guide on your visit here as they do not entertain walk-in guests. All arrangements are done in Sandakan town in Sabah. Night River Cruises or Safaris are organised by the lodged themselves so this is an optional package offered when you check in at the lodge.

Types of lodges available at Bukit Melapi Lodge:
  • 10 units of twin sharing lodge

Putrajaya Hot Air Balloon Fiesta 2010

Putrajaya Hot Air Balloon Fiesta 2010

Putrajaya Hot Air Balloon Fiesta 2010 was the 2nd Balloon Festival held in Malaysia from the 19th to 21st March and the turn out was amazing over the weekend. People from all walks of life and from all over drove down to witness this amazing balloon show in Putrajaya with 23 hot air balloons participating from around the world. Fortunately for me, it was a coincidence that I was visiting Putrajaya for the weekend and took the opportunity to visit the Putrajaya Hot Air Balloon Fiesta 2010.

Latest Update (19th March, Saturday 2011) Hot Air Balloon Putrajaya 2011 Pictures  I visited the festival and took some pictures on Saturday 19th March.

Filling the balloon with hot air is no easy task

The Hot Air Balloon Fiesta 2010 at Purtajaya was indeed a success as over a 100,000 people came to watch the balloons over the weekend. The main highlight was the unique shaped hot air balloons like the Darth Vader Hot Air Balloon and a pair of Levis Jeans Balloon which the crowd absolutely loved. It was really and eye opener for most people when they witnessed these unique odd shaped hot air balloons in Putrajaya this year around.

For the record, if you plan to visit the 3rd Putrajaya Hot Air Balloon Fiesta for 2011, you should be well prepared before you head there. Reason being was through my experience at the current fiesta. Read more about this at the end of this article for tips and information.

General crowd at the Hot Air Balloon Festival

The Hot Air Balloon Fiesta in Purtajaya was held in the vicinity of the Millenium Obelisk or the Monument Alaf Baru which is the road off the main Putrajaya Boulevard in Precinct 2. So, the inner roads there will be closed off to the public making it a open walkway for everyone. However, you have to give way to the pick-up trucks bringing the hot air balloons back to the grounds from the hot air balloon races.

During the event, there were the para-gliders team who were going around the Hot Air Balloon grounds in their little machines. There must have been at least 10 of them taking turns to circle the area in groups of threes and fours. They were gliding pretty low too so this was a great photo opportunity for many people.

Food was no issue at the Balloon Fiesta in Putrajaya as there were all kinds of fast food, local food and international food being sold. A hive of activities are provided throughout the hot air balloon grounds with informative tents to displays of light aircraft. There were also Helicopter Rides where a 15 minute Helicopter Ride was charges at RM150.00 per person. For those with a healthy wallet or purse, this would be a great experience to fly in a helicopter around Putrajaya.

Balloon sellers having a field day at the Putrajaya Hot Air Balloon Fiesta 2010

One thing that caught many children eyes were the cartoon balloon sellers which were abundant around the area. I must have seen at least 20 balloon sellers walking around with helium filled balloons. Most popular were the Sponge Bob Balloons followed by other Japanese characters like Hello Kitty Balloons and even Naruto Balloons.

View of the crowd at 9am in the morning at Putrajaya

Tickets for the Hot Air Balloon Rides at Putrajaya were absolutely sold out by 7am. Here's my experience on the 21st March Sunday - I was staying at the Pullman Hotel and Resort Putrajaya for the weekend and thought that I would go in early on Sunday morning to get tickets. I eventually got there at about 8am - There was already a terrible traffic jam getting into the parking at the grounds. So, next year, please be prepared - Either park further and walk there or go early.

So, I finally got into a line for one of the Hot Air Balloon Rides which are RM10 per person and there were 5 Balloons for the rides. After waiting in line for about 10 minutes, one of the personnel approached everyone asking about their tickets and when it came to me, I did not have one and asked him where can I get one, he told me they were sold out since 7am. No kidding. The event starts at 7am and they were sold out at 7am!

This was my most favourite balloon shot!

Buying tickets for Putrajaya Hot Air Balloon Ride - Here's how it was done related from one of the staff there to me. People were seen lining up at the ticket counter from as early as 5am on Sunday. By 6 am, the line had stretched to over 200 meters long and by 7am the tickets were sold out. So, unless the management of the Balloon Fiesta works something out for next years Putrajaya Hot Air Balloon Fiesta 2011, there are going to be a lot of unhappy people.

Tickets were limited to 300 a session where there were 2 sessions a day and each hot air balloon could only go for 60 rides, meaning 60 tickets per balloon. Maybe next year, they can have 10 Hot Air Balloon for Rides for Putrajaya. There are no pre-buying the balloon ride tickets so you need to be there before the event to buy your tickets. You should have seen the sad faces of hundreds of people when they found out there were no tickets available.

Armed and ready with a zoom lens

What came as a shock to me during the event was not only the balloons but the crowds which came armed with DSLR Cameras and high end equipments. Many came to capture the moment armed with tripods, mono-pods and all kinds of zoom lenses. Some lenses even the price of a small compact car!

Well prepared for the Hot Air Balloon pictures

Seriously, I must have seen one in five people using a DSLR Camera during the Balloon Festival in Purtrajaya. Times must be good this year in 2010 or the big camera companies like Nikon, Canon, Olympus and Fuji are having a super sale on DSLR Cameras.

Putrajaya Hot Air Balloon Fiesta 2010 was a success from the turn out and hopefully for 2011, we will see more unique shaped hot air balloons. See you next year and congratulations to the Team for organising this amazing event in Malaysia!

Borneo Bird Festival 2010 Sabah

Borneo Bird Festival 2010, second time around will be held at the Rainforest Discovery Center or RDC in Sepilok, Sandakan Sabah from the 15th to 17th October 2010. This year marks the 2nd year for birders or bird watchers to gather at this amazing festival organised by Sabah Tourism Board in conjunction with promoting Bird Watching and Eco-Tourism in Sabah Borneo.

Bird Watchers or Birders should be excited as this time around, the Borneo Bird Festival 2010 will feature two new birding books launched personally by Ms Susan Myers and Mr Quentin Phillipps who are well known birders. This would definitely be a book to get and have it autographed by the authors while attending this Bird Festival here in Borneo.

The Borneo Bird Festival 2010 will also have a number of fantastic booths showcasing bird tours from local travel agents, birding equipment by Nikon and others, exhibits by NGOs and talks by professionals in the field. The highlight of the event will be the Lectures and Workshops for this years Borneo Bird Fest.

Notable speakers from important organizations such as Birdlife International, Malaysian Nature Society (MNS), Queensland University of Technology (Australia), Japan Birding Tours, and Singapore Botanical Gardens will be there at the festival. There are minimal fees to attend the Lectures, Workshops and Guided Tours. You are advised to register early to avoid disappointment as there is limited space for these events.

In Borneo, a total of 622 resident and migratory species of bird, with 32 endemic species have been recorded. Four of these endemics are found on either Sabah’s hill slopes or in its montane forest. Mount Kinabalu is regarded as a distribution center for all except for one of Borneo’s montane birds.

In Sabah, the most sought after endemic species are the Whitehead’s Trogon and Whitehead’s Broadbill, the Blue-headed Pitta and the vividly coloured Blue-banded Pitta, the large and distinctly coloured Bornean Ground Cuckoo, the rare and ungainly Bornean Bristlehead, as well as the Golden-naped Barbet with its signature trilling call.
