Sandakan - A nature paradise waiting to be further explored

Sandakan - A nature paradise waiting to be further explored

On my recent trip to Sandakan in Sabah Borneo, I had the pleasure of visiting various places around the famous Eco-Tourism district which highlights Sepilok Orangutan Conservation Center, Rainforest Discovery Center (RDC) and also the incredible Kinabatangan River where the river cruises are the main attractions. It was at one of the river cruises at night that I managed to capture the picture above from a boat. A Kingfisher bird was resting on one of the branches and clearly was not disturbed by my presence there.

Another of the exciting places where cameras went into a shooting frenzy was at the world renown Sepilok Orangutan Conservation Center. I must have witnessed at least 50 cameras of all types and sizes at work when the juvenile orangutans started to come out during the feeding times at the center.

For the third and final picture in this segment, I took this picture at about 6.30am on an early morning river safari along the Kinabatangan river. Abundance of birds dominate the river and some of them are rare species so for bird watchers or Birders, this is one of the amazing places to further your hobby. I have to say that Sandakan offers Nature Lovers unlimited choices in this East coast town of Sabah.

For the record, there will be the second Borneo Bird Fest will be held at the RDC on 15th to 17th October 2010.

Trip sound really great!! I truly love this place, there are two feeding times at the platform, where I looked Orang Utans of various ages coming from deep in the forest to drink milk and eat bananas. Orang Utans are the largest apes in Asia, and the largest vegetarian apes in the world.

Best Regards,
