The Datai also has five restaurants where the award winning Gulai House is the most popular there. This restaurant is located away from the resorts main building and situated in the middle of a rainforest. This Kampung Style open air restaurant serves out authentic Malay and Indian styled cuisine in generous portions.

One of the waiting areas

Most packages here do not include breakfast so do inquire about the Breakfast Inclusive Packages when you book. Besides this, there are several other packages available which include Wedding and Honeymoon Packages, Long Stay Packages and Back To Nature Packages.

If you want a honeymoon or anniversary to remember, surprise your loved one by booking a week long stay here. Also if you are looking for a luxurious, exclusive, but relaxed romantic getaway then this is definitely the right place.

Note: The Datai is isolated from everything so if you want to walk about or visit Kuah Town, they can arrange for this. Also, watch out for the monkeys while you stay there. They are known to explore guests rooms so keep those windows locked when you are out or you may find some items missing when you get back.

Kenyir Lake Resort and Spa

Kenyir Lake Resort and Spa

Kenyir Lake Resort and Spa is one of the few resorts that cater to Eco-tourism in Malaysia. Located on the banks of Lake Kenyir (Tasik Kenyir), the resort covers an area of 60 acres and is surrounded by the world's oldest tropical rainforest in the region and is the one of the main gateways to Taman Negara, Malaysia's national park.

Kenyir Lake Resort and Spa

Lake Kenyir Resort and Spa is also one of the best getaways I have had because it is in the middle of nowhere. Getting to Kenyir Resort is fairly simple as from the town of Terengganu, one has to self drive for an hour heading towards Kuala Berang and then to the resort. I was lucky as when I arrived here, it was low season and the place was very quiet. Just perfect for a nice and quiet holiday at Kenyir.

Kenyir Lake Resort and Spa - Outside the main entrance

Kenyir Lake Resort and Spa comprises of 135 individual chalets which almost all of them are facing Lake Kenyir. This was one of the perks of staying at the chalets as you could witness the beautiful rainforest sunsets against the lake while listening to the pure sounds of nature.

Kenyir Lake Resort and Spa - Main entrance

The main entrance of the Kenyir Resort is mainly made from wood with hints of traditional Malay wood carvings on various pillars of the structure. It gives you a warm feeling when you walk in as the entire place is open aired.

Beautiful architecture throughout the resort

Kenyir Lake Resort and Spa - Resort buggy service

After checking in, I was ushered into a waiting buggy from the resort which would take us to our lake view chalet. The polite staff helped us carry our bags and we were off for a 10 minute ride around the resort grounds before reaching our Malay styled wooden chalet.

Kenyir Lake Resort and Spa - View of some chalets along the banks

Passing many other chalets, I could not help notice that most of them were by the banks of the lake while some were perched on the hillside opposite the buggy path.

Kenyir Lake Resort and Spa - Room view

Reaching the chalet, I must say I was totally shocked to see how nice they were from the inside as from the outside, they just look like any other chalet. So, judging from the pictures you see, these were all taken by me. Not some stock footage taken from a website. Pretty impressive I thought to myself when I opened the chalet door.

Kenyir Lake Resort and Spa - Sitting area in the chalet room

There was no Plasma or LCD Television but for a 29" inch, it was good enough for me. Not that I came here to watch TV. The sofa was comfortable but I used it to put my bags.

Kenyir Lake Resort and Spa - Bathroom

The bathroom was equally fantastic. It was large and spacious with a hint of modern design. I absolutely had no complaints whatsoever here. The showers were fantastic!

Kenyir Lake Resort and Spa - Sunset view from my chalet balcony

Actually I had checked in late on that day so by the time I had settled down in my room and went out to the balcony, I could not believe the beauty which was waiting for me outside. It was about half past six and the sun was about to set behind the mountains and rainforest. That night, I had one of the best sleeps in a very long time as the sounds of crickets and night creatures were such a lullaby to my ears.

View of Kenyir Lake from the restaurant balcony

The next morning, I headed out for the buffet breakfast and I choose to sit outdoors where the views were spectacular. In the picture above, I had finished my breakfast and walked not more than 10 feet to the balcony to capture that view.

The Kenyir Resort Restaurant has two sections to have your meals, one being indoor with air conditioning and the other which is outside. I am guessing, it is the outdoors that most guests would be sitting as the air is fresh with excellent views of Lake Kenyir.

Kenyir Lake Resort and Spa - Restaurant

The restaurant is located one level below the lobby so looking up from the restaurant, you can see part of the main lobby and reception area which is a favourite area for viewing the lake. If you go one level lower, you are at the pool area.

Kenyir Lake Resort and Spa - Coffee House view

Inside the lobby coffee house, one could also have amazing views of Lake Kenyir. Generally, from almost anywhere in the resort, you can see this beautiful lake. A plus point is that there are no other resorts visible when you stay here.

Kenyir Lake Resort and Spa jetty

I had booked a boat trip around Kenyir Lake from the resort sport and recreational department. They offer various activities from kayaking, fishing, nature trips, waterfall visits and all things related to Kenyir Lake. Right after lunch, I met up with my local guide who then took us to the resort jetty where our custom cruiser was waiting.

Kenyir Lake Resort and Spa - Boat trip to the lake

The boat took us for a 3 hour tour around Lake Kenyir and mainly to the waterfalls and to see the famous Kenyir Dead Trees. Along the way, we saw various fishing boats, boat houses and even a boat hotel (uncompleted one though). Fishing in Kenyir Lake is a big thing for locals if you should know, you can read about this in my other blog posting at the end of this post.

Along the way back to the Kenyir Resort and Spa jetty, I asked the boat man to cruise pass the resort chalets as I would like to see them from the lake point of view. So from the shots you see here, they are nicely built along the banks of the Kenyir Lake having one of the best views.

Ulik Mayang Spa at Kenyir Resort

Even the Kenyir Ulik Mayang Spa was an entire bungalow unit which had a beautiful lake view. Sadly I did not have time for a spa or massage at this famous local Kenyir Ulik Mayang Spa. I had put this for my next trip here as I have heard great reviews about the Malay Traditional Massage.

Kenyir Lake Resort and Spa - Chalets lined along the banks

My conclusion to the Kenyir Lake Resort and Spa - It is a very beautiful nature loving place. If you are the sort that loves the city or shopping, this is not the place for you. This place caters to those who love nature, eco-tourism, the wildlife, fishing, bird watching and just plain relaxing without any worries.

In the resort, there is a convenience shop, gift shop, laundry and even air ticket confirmation here. Everything revolves around this resort and Internet broadband is available if you need to keep in touch with the cyber world.

Kenyir Resort is also an excellent place to bring your kids for a full rainforest experience and connecting with nature. The resorts recreational department is full of activities so please inquire with them. I would suggest you book a boat trip to explore the lake.

Take note that this place caters to a lot of western tourist who come here to enjoy our beautiful rainforest so you may see a lot of them around the resort.

Room Rates here are from;
  • RM380 (US$108) Superior Chalets
  • RM440 (US$125) Deluxe Chalets

Kampar River White Water Rafting Gopeng Perak

Kampar River White Water Rafting Videos

Kampar River White Water Rafting in Gopeng, Perak Malaysia. This is part two of my water rafting blog and you can read part one of my Kampar River Water Rafting here. All the general information you need about getting there and about what happens before you start water rafting can be found in the first part. For water rafting beginners, you should read that posting first before moving on to this posting.

Just so you know, in this posting, there will be a lot of Water Rafting Videos. Some with beautiful serene scenery and most with exciting rafting adventures like going through Class III rapids, people falling off, rafts overturning and more.

Kampar River Water Rafting Video - Beautiful rafting

The Kampar River is actually very beautiful as you can see from the video above. There are various parts where you raft freely along the river enjoying the lush rainforest scene along the way.

Going from Class 1 to Class 2 rapids

In most parts of the Kampar River or Sungai Kampar, the rapids are quite mild. Most of the rapids here are in Class 1 or 2 and occasionally Class 3. Mind you that some people classify the rapids in Class or Grade. Grade One being the easiest where Grade Three is considered medium. A strong rapid would fall under Grade Four or Grade Five but none of these grades here at Kampar River.

A raft passing Grade Two rapids

Water Rafting can be quite tricky, especially when going through the rapids. Sometimes the raft may hit a rock and do a complete 360 degrees turn which is quite fun. A good tip here is to hold on to the raft rope when this happens.

2 People fall off the raft in rapid

At the early stages of water rafting down Sungai Kampar and just as we hit our first few bigger rapids, two people from the last boat in the video fell off going through a rapid. One of them were immediately rescued while the other girl went along with the rapids. However the captains of my raft and another raft were quick to respond by telling her to remain calm and not panic while she was pulled to our raft with the back of the paddle and then pulled on board the raft. A good experience to the beginners to know what to do in the event they fall off.

 4th Raft overturns at rapids

In this part of the rafting video, it totally caught all the rafters by surprise. The first three rafts made it through some Class II Rapids when the last raft with 4 persons on board came in and suddenly overturned. You can see the three rafters being carried by the rapids and the other rafts ready to rescue them. It was quite dramatic for the beginners and some of them actually enjoyed the experience.

Someone falls off the raft at Sungai Kampar

This was totally unexpected as I was filming the two rafts in front of me and suddenly one person fell off the front raft after hitting a rock. Then my raft went straight for the same rock as the rapids were in that direction. Eventually the person that fell off was rescued by the same raft she fell off.

Raft gets flooded after a Class 2-3 Rapid

Getting ready for some Class Two and Three rapids, the main camera raft gets a little stuck heading into the rapids. However, after managing to go through the rapids, water gushes in and floods up the raft. No one fell over as you can see in the video, everyone was instructed to sit in the raft and hold on tight with the call of the captain just before we went into the rapids.

After a 360 spin, my camera raft goes head on to another raft!

In this rafting video, my camera raft goes through some Class II rapids and then does a 360 spin and recovers. But we then realise that we are headed straight to another raft which appeared to be stuck and we banged them head on. No one fell off though.

Force overturn of raft in Kampar river

Just before the half way break point for our two hour rafting trip, the raft captains purposely made the rafts overturn to get everyone into the river. It was fun and a good experience for those who never experienced a raft over turn.

Kampar River Water Rafting - Half way stopping point

At the half-way break point, we make a stop by the side of the river bank. All four rafts stopped here for a short 10 minute break to stretch our legs, drink water and some, to have a cigarette break. A water-proof bag held the cigatettes if you should know.

Experiencing Class Two and Class Three Rapids

In this water rafting video, you see all four rafts going through the Kampar River Class II and Class III Rapids. A point-of-view video from my main raft shows you the feeling of what you might expect during white water rafting down the Kampar River.

Two rafts passing a rapid with Uhuru Rafts

Kampar River or Sungai Itik scenery at the end of the rafting

Rafting towards the end point of Sungai Kampar

Just before reaching the end point, we cruised past a local homestay and some breathtaking scenery with clear blue skies. Most of the rafting companies would end at this spot which is also a local Malay village and your pick up point to head back. Local Malay food is served buffet style before we get back on the lorry for our journey to the Gua Tempurung Caves.

Beautiful scenery at Gopeng, Kampar

On the way back to Gua Tempurung Cave via lorry, I passed some amazing scenery through the kampungs (villages), something we seldom see these days in the cities.

This is what you would look like in the rafting attire

For the record, all the Kampar Water Rafting videos and photographs are all taken by me, David. I used a waterproof camera and also a Digital SLR Camera for the pictures here. Take note that if you are new, please avoid trying to photograph your rafting experience as it could pose dangerous.

Kampar River White Water Rafting in Perak Malaysia

Kampar River
White Water Rafting in Perak, Malaysia (Part 1)

Kampar River White Water Rafting in Perak is one of the basic water rafting courses in Malaysia. I had the opportunity to experience this rafting trip with some of my friends at the famous Sungai Kampar (Sungai Itik) with water rapids ranging from Grade One to Grade Three through about 14 rapids in total. We booked our rafting trip through Ivy Holidays and the journey started very early for most of us as it is a one and a half hour drive from Kuala Lumpur to Gopeng, Kampar.

Kampar River Water Rafting - Lorry service to the river

Kampar River or Sungai Kampar as it is locally known is one of the easier rafting choices if you are seeking group or family fun or even if you have a company trip. The rapids here are mild compared to other rivers which offer white water rafting. For our group of 9 people, we booked this rafting trip weeks ahead and made arrangements to meet up at Gua Tempurung Cave in Gopeng.

Kampar River Water Rafting - Gua Tempurong Cave public toilets

We left Kuala Lumpur at about 6.30am in order to get to Gua Tempurung by 8.30am to meet up with the Ivy Holidays staff and raft captains. On arrival at the entrance to Gua Tempurung, we parked our cars at the open parking lot and then had a change of attire at the public toilets near by. Bringing what we needed, we then got on to a medium sized lorry which would take us to Sungai Kampar for our white water rafting experience.

Kampar River Water Rafting - Lorry journey to Ulu Geroh village

The journey to Sungai Kampar for water rafting was something I did not expect as all of us were herded onto the lorry for a 25 minute journey though some beautiful scenery of the Gopeng and Kampar Kampungs (Villages). The raft captain, Ramlie, who was seated with us reminded those standing to look out for low branches during the journey.

Video of lorry journey to Sungai Kampar Rafting

Kampar River Water Rafting - Passing Eco resorts and homestays

Passing many beautiful landscapes, I must admit that it was a wonderful journey by lorry. Something I would always remember. We passed kampung homes, plantations, jungles and even Eco Resorts like The Gopeng Rainforest Resort, camp sites and local village homestays.

Kampar River Water Rafting - Passing Orang Asli homes

Along the way, I also saw some unique kampung homes looking like it was built for only one person. As we drove in deeper, we approached near Ulu Geroh, the Orang Asli village of Gopeng, out stop was just up ahead.

Kampar River Water Rafting - Uhuru Helmets and Paddles

Getting down from the lorry, we headed to a point where all the rafting equipment was ready for us. Grabbing a helmet, paddle and a life jacket, some looked confused as they were first timers doing water rafting.

Kampar River Water Rafting - Captain Ramli showing how to use a life vest

But everything was well organised as the raft captain Ramile from Uhuru Raft gathered everyone around to demonstrate how the vest and helmet was worn. After checking everyone one by one for safety procedures, we were then taken across a bridge over the Kampar River to the starting point for our white water rafting experience.

Kampar River Water Rafting - Raft captain briefing the rafters

It was here that the full safety briefing was conducted. Mind you this was my 7th rafting trip (see the end of this post for my other rafting stories in Sabah) so I had generally told my buddies about this briefing as it is very important that you pay attention to it as it will save your life. So the safety briefing went on for a good 15 minutes where Ramile, who is a trained professional rafter told us about paddling commands and what we needed to do in the event of a raft over turning or someone falling off.

Kampar River Water Rafting - Safety briefing

Another of the raft captains was also in the water to demonstrate certain things that we should do in the even one of us fell off the water. How to remain calm and also which direction we should keep our feet.

Kampar River Water Rafting - Rafting begins!

With double assurance from the rafters, Ramlie then allocated us to our rafts to begin our 2 hour white water rafting trip along the Kampar River. The entire journey would go through several rapids with grade one to grade 3 (class I to class III) and is not a continuous rapid for 20 km. Various places have the rapids where most places we would just paddle the rafts with the river flow.
