Layer Cakes in Bandung, Kartikasari and Mayasari

Layer Cakes in Bandung, Indonesia

Kartikasari Layer Cakes (Kek Lapis)

Layer Cakes in Bandung are a must try considering that this city is famous for their layer cakes. Well known bakeries throughout town sell them and if you are unsure, simply ask the locals for directions. Though the popular ones are on the pricey side, there are many to choose from. However, you be the judge when you attempt to try some of the popular ones available here.

Kartikasari
or Kartika Sari is one of the most famous bakeries in Bandung. Specialising in layer cakes and Pisang Molen they do not come cheap at all! Be warned that a brick of layer cake will set you back Rp.140,000 (RM 44.80) For a full sized layer cake, the price is Rp440,000 (RM 140.00) and per slice, Rp.8,000 (RM 2.50). So, how many layer cakes did you promise your relatives and friends?

Kartikasari Bakery in Bandung

KartikaSari Bakery is also a very popular stop for all Jakarta tourist. For the record, the common locals do not shop here. It is sort of a luxury bakery and one can spend thousands of Rupiah in Kartika Sari just on Layer Cakes. Seriously, even my supir/driver has never tried the layer cake from Kartikasari. I ended up buying one for him since he was so patient and a very nice person. I asked him if he had tried it and his reply was 'this is rich mans cakes, I usually get my wife to make them or buy them from the local stalls'.

Kartika Sari notice

Kartikasari also claims to be only in Bandung! No other outlets outside of Bandung, so one can only get them in Bandung. A damn good gimmick to keep people coming back to Kartika Sari in Bandung.

A selection of pastries

The crowd

The crowd at Kartikasari is simply amazing on weekends. Every bakery outlet we pass, you would see this kind of crown in there. People seem to be buying 3 or 4 layer cakes per person not forgetting the other goodies there. This alone shows that Kartikasari is really popular in Bandung not only for the layer cake but also for the overall selection.

Lots of choices

Besides the Layer Cake, Pisang Molen, Pastries, nonya cakes, ice cream and all types of cakes are available here. Other items include Indonesian biscuits and keropok. Seriously, some of the stuff here is better than back in KL. Especially the pastries. But again, the Layer Cake is simply awesome!

Mayasari Bakery
Mayasari outlet at the Bandung airport

Mayasari is another well known outlet which sells the layer cakes and pisang bolen. Not that I saw a lot of them in town, but the one at the airport before you leave was pretty stocked up with slabs of layer cake or slices of it. Last minute shoppers would tend to use up the remaining rupiahs there by buying the layer cakes or like we did. I bought 2 slices of layer cake and ate it there itself.

HOLLAND BAKERY

Holland Bakery in town

Another chain of bakeries in Bandung called Holland Bakery. They are so prominent, you can easily identify them by the windmills on top of the building. Even the taxi drivers know of Holland Bakery. We bought a few pastries from here but I did not see any layer cakes. I assumed they were finished as it was quite late at night. Driving around town, I counted at least about 3 Holland Bakeries around town.

Holland Bakery outlets address:

Jl. Sunda 68 Bandung, Tel: 022 4234434

Malaysia Asia, a travel site by David Jr

Getting to know David Jr from Malaysia Asia.

Welcome to my travel site Malaysia Asia. I am an avid traveler and enjoy exploring new places for all sorts of positive values. From photographing to learning about the place, you will find most of me and my co-writer (Lilian who handles more CSR) sharing our travel experiences with our readers here. You should also know that Malaysia Asia is not a travel blog but more of a travel site with information about all things Malaysia and Asia.

I have been living in the lovely city of Petaling Jaya in the state of Selangor in Malaysia for almost all of my life though I was born in Taiping in the Perak state, my family moved to Petaling Jaya in 1971. That is about 39 years now. So, I would easily consider myself a city person with city ethics.

Posing at one of the pre-war shops in Gergetown, Penang

I come from a film background over the last 20 years and now I focus mainly on traveling, social media marketing and management, and Malaysia Asia. On the lighter side - Life is good if you ask me as it is always full of unexpected situations when you choose to live this kind of life. How we look and decipher them is another ball game all together.

If you should know, I started traveling the minute I finished school back in 1987. A 26 hour Bangkok trip by train opened up my eyes and I have never stopped since. I have experienced working and living in Tokyo, Japan at a ripe age of 19 years old and partied at the Northern Mariana Islands of Saipan and Guam (in the Pacific Ocean) when I was 20 years old.

Trying to look better than the statue behind me at Angkor Wat

The early years took me to various places around the world starting with Australia's Brisbane and Gold Coast and all the way to Perth. From there on, I just kept going. I must have visited the United Kingdom 6 times and Los Angeles about 5 times. A three week trip to Northern Europe to Finland, Sweden and Amsterdam taught me about life in the colder countries as I had never experienced this coming from a tropical country.

One of the best places I have visited in all my travels have got to be South Africa's Cape Town and going right down to the Cape Of Good Hope. From there, I flew over to Buenos Aires, Argentina to experience the South American culture and visiting Evita Peron's Tombstone to name a few of the activities I did there.

Goofing around with Bruce Lee in Hong Kong

Of lately in the last 5 years, I have been focusing on local travels and around the South East Asia region and here is where you see most of my current work on Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Macau, Hong Kong and my personal favorite, the main Island of Borneo, namely Sabah and Sarawak.I also indulge in Scuba Diving as a personal hobby of mine.

I am pretty much active on Social Media therefore you can reach me on the various platforms listed below:
One of my companies focuses on a lot of Social Media Management, Marketing and Campaigning for the travel industry.I work closely with Tourism Bodies, Hotels & Resorts and even Travel Companies by assisting them in getting more out of Social Media platforms. Contact me if you need to learn more about this.

So with this, I hope you enjoy reading my travel blog and if you need to ask me anything, please do email me here - juniorhogan [at] gmail [dot] com or simply use the Contact Malaysia Asia Form.
